Movies made by minorities often don’t get traction unless they’re explicitly about minorities. But the mesmerizing new film “Columbus,” released last week, breaks through that wall.
The movie stars John Cho, making it the first film since the viral #StarringJohnCho meme of last year in which John Cho is playing the lead. It’s also the debut project by Kogonada, an Asian American film essayist turned filmmaker.
VICE News visited Columbus, Indiana, the film’s location, and talked with Kogonada and Cho about the barriers they face in making art that is ‘universal’.
