Grey Code – Horus

Buy ‘Horus’ – http://bit.ly/2pSZPwm

Since their inception in January this year, Principle Records have been making a name as a no nonsense drum and bass label, striving to bring unrivalled quality to the scene. Recently packing out Bristol’s Motion with their label takeover that included a headline set from heavyweight Jubei, the label is setting the bar high and has been successful in delivering to date.

Their debut release is no different, presenting minimal distinguished cuts from the darker side of the spectrum. Hosting a selection of seasoned and up and coming producers, ‘Impressions Vol 1’ floats between ethereal mechanical soundscapes filled with steppy militant breaks; to swirling cavernous basslines wrapped around sci-fi esque pads. Each individual offering is a stand out production in its own right, collectively reflecting the sound that Principle Records have been cultivating since its launch.

Bristol/Brighton based producer Grey Code kicks of this 12 track LP with ‘Horus’; a subtle onset of menacing electronic pads and echoing bass wrapped around steppy double time drums and glitch synths.

Skankandbass – Top 15 in 2015

Top 15 on YouTube: http://bit.ly/1QPrPaN
Top 15 on SoundCloud: http://bit.ly/1RMbVxY
Top 15 on Spotify: http://spoti.fi/1IwNmSR

In no particular order, here are my favourite 15 tracks of the year:

00:00 Dimension – Whip Slap

It all started with a video on social media causing hype havoc. Undoubtably one of the biggest tracks in drum & bass this year – simple yet highly effective, this one’s been tearing down dance floors worldwide throughout the whole of 2015. Having taken himself to the top competing with some of the best producers in the scene, exciting prospects are in store for Dimension in 2016.

00:17 Noisia & The Upbeats – Dead Limit

A tried and tested winning collab combination. This track was a few years in the making and it was worth it for that reese that kicks in after 48 bars alone. Possessing incredible production and impact, it’s no surprise ‘Dead Limit’ has received heavy rotation throughout Summer and the tail end of the year. It’s a tight one between this and ‘Whip Slap’ as track of the year!

00:35 DRS ft. Jubei – The Puppeteer

DRS is always there to deliver a strand out track. This time partnering up with Jubei, the collaboration has a perfect balance of rolling darkness and a vocal hook which is as catchy as always. One of my favourite tracks to hear dropped in the dance this year – bouncy!

00:48 Lynx – Clap Track

The man who gave us ‘Disco Dodo’ re-introduced the unique style with ‘Clap Track’ – designed for djing, this one’s an absolute hurter once deployed on innocent gurning ravers.

01:11 Xtrah – What Would You Do!?

Another example of simple yet effective – my love for this track is very strong – gunfinger inducer. Xtrah’s had a sensational year and is no doubt now considered one of the best producers in the scene.

01:44 Dawn Wall – Angel Field

Yes, we all want to know who Dawn Wall is/are, but I honestly hope we never find out! Two EP’s on Integral in the bag and a huge impact left within the drum & bass scene. Angel Field and Lose Face are my favourite from the EP’s, but Angel Field just tips it – I can’t wait to hear the debut LP in 2016.

Side note: I commissioned Dawn Wall’s remix for Nero – Into The Night, does that mean I know who they are? Ooooof.

02:17 Break & DLR – Human Error

One word for this one – ‘mixdown’ – jesus fucking christ. I dropped this at The Nest when I was warming up before Spor’s set earlier this year and rest assured, the dance floor turned in to a zoo. So many tracks you could pick from these two producers separately.

02:50 SCAR – Caged

SCAR aka Survival & Script have been churning out some huge rollers on Headz in the last two years. ‘Caged’ is certainly the stand out track which turned heads within the scene. I dropped this in room 2 fabric recently and the system had a bit of a work out. Gunfingers were raised.

03:14 Hive – Repentance

It’s always good to hear new music from Hive and ‘Repentance’ definitely delivered. I love the delay in drop and progression of the track which makes for a wicked listen and journey when experienced on a dancefloor.

03:36 SpectraSoul – Always

SpectraSoul delivered us a sensational and versatile album via Shogun Audio this year – ‘Always’ is definitely my pick of the bunch. Vibe-o-meter hitting a solid 10, I haven’t heard a track like it in a while – very cinematic. Good work chaps.

04:07 LSB – Walking Blues

LSB is one of the best liquid producers hands down. Output has been incredibly strong for Luke in 2016, including ‘The View’ with DRS and Tyler Daley, but ‘Walking Blues’ on his Soul:R EP definitely takes the biscuit for me. INCREDIBLE.

04:31 Joy Orbison – Hyph Mngo (Vandera Remix)

This one surfaced at the start of the year and I’ve been playing it on repeat ever since. Being a big fan of the original, Vandera has done it justice with effortless execution.

05:04 Bomfunk MC’s – Freestyler (Teknian & Zero Zero ft. JFB Remix)

Quite a late addition to the year. Having been a massive fan of the original in my youth, seeing this track title alone got me excited and I’m happy that Teknian & Zero Zero did the original justice with a headsy approach. The intro is a perfect tease in mixes and the drop is very unexpected, yet satisfying! Free download vibes.

05:38 Ivy Lab – Sunday Crunk (Mefjus Remix)

I don’t really need to say much about this one. Absolutely stupid mixdown – with that build up you’re expecting a two step drum pattern, but the half time element and piercing bass create that ‘shock’ element which really turns the dance in to a frenzy.

06:00 Bensley – Next Generation

Bensley came out of no where to drop an LP via Ram Records. Although I’m not massively in to the LP as a whole and I think his production can improve, this track has undeniable musicality which is extremely difficult to dislike. I’m excited to see what this guy’s got lined up in 2016.

Jubei – Out of Sight feat. Tyrone

Buy: http://bit.ly/1QARMv2

The return of Jubei to the Metalheadz fold as a recording artist. The success of his debut album ‘To Have & Have Not’ led to an intense touring schedule for Jubei, demand was high from United Kingdom to Japan and everywhere in between. Following this Jubei took some time out from touring and returned to the studio to craft five tracks in his typical streamlined fashion. The tracks act a statement of intent from the producer, no one can quite match what he does and the music proves it.

Lead track Congo is assured and confident, Paragon features new vocalist Rumour- cold soul against a bleak landscape. Further guest appearances come from Tyrone of Chroma and Steo accents the amen led Cold Corner. The EP closes with Haunt, a functional tool for DJ and dancefloors. Listening to the EP in its entirety feels like Jubei never left, it’s a welcome return by one of Metalheadz leading lights.

Russian hell raisers repping with raw clarity: few acts have shown such broad skills as Teddy Killerz. Since emerging two years ago, they’ve worked with some of the biggest names across D&B, glitch, trap, dubstep and beyond. In each and every instance they’ve demonstrated an innate understanding of all genres with alarming killer motifs.

Their debut EP for Program sees them return to the source. D&B is where it began for the trio, and it’s where they show their most muscular, mindbending musical skills. Appearing on Andy C’s ‘Nightlife 6’ in November 2013 with the pranged out ‘Impossible’, these four tracks will be smashing dancefloors worldwide.

We kick off with the stunning ‘Big Blow’. Truly unique, it combines sharp percussive elements and a waspish bassline with a deep funk hook that’s entrenched in dramatic pianos and jazzy organs. Timeless, distinctive and daring, there is nothing out there like this.

‘Jackyl & Hyde’ follows. A physical gritty groove slams and shoves with power while Coppa lays down crisp lyrical messages. Textured with intricate production elements and more of the trio’s emphatic drum dynamics, it’s an instant head-turner.

Next up: ‘Era’. Delving further into the darkness, the trio whisk us on a mission into deep space. Smelting elements of complex neuro production with classical, minimal funk, ‘Era’ weaves a tight sci-fi web that’s guaranteed to take your floor to another planet.

Finally we hit ‘Una Mattina’. Flipping the triplet switch with euphoric glee, what begins as a rush-fuelled star-gazer soon drops us head-first into another devious, bass-bitten workout. Swaggering with an infectious confident groove, we’re bombarded with an array of precision synth shots, sweeps and stabs, each element adding a wealth of funk to the overall vibe.

Living up to their name in a major way, Teddy Killerz really are killing it with these four shock-outs. It’s time, once again, to get with the Program!

Lenzman – Wordsworth

Available to buy from the 4th June on Metalheadz.

Become a fan of Lenzman: http://www.facebook.com/thelenzman

Check out his UKF Podcast: http://www.mixcloud.com/ukfmusic/ukf-music-podcast-19-lenzman-in-the-mix/

Following on from Jubei and Flowdan’s immense single, ‘Say Nothing,’ comes another of Metalheadz’ core artists with a perfectly produced release. Currently working on his debut album, Lenzman has already crafted a string of incredible tracks for Headz that have seen him garner the attentions of tastemakers such as BBC Radio 1’s MistaJam alongside the drum & bass ruling class of elite DJs. And ‘How Did I Let U Go?,’ Lenzman’s latest single is undoubtedly going to continue his well-deserved run of success.

Teaming up with friend, long-term collaborator and hugely successful D&B vocalist, Riya, Lenzman once again provides an impeccably put together backdrop to match her sweet vocal talents. Rolling breakbeats and gentle synths open for twinkling piano lines that Riya rides effortlessly across, creating a beautifully relaxed and emotive piece of drum & bass. Fans of Lenzman and Riya’s previous collaborations will not be disappointed here, ‘How Did I Let U Go?’ is more than a worthy successor to the likes of ‘Open Page,’ offering graceful class that seeps from every musical pore.

Topping the standout beauty of the A side is no mean fete, but Lenzman’s years of experience shine through on ‘Wordsworth,’ a track which stands up perfectly to ‘How Did I Let U Go?,’ without overshadowing it. Stepping beats and washing pads are overlaid with snippets of male vocals before a signature Lenzman bassline gets the floor shaking. As the track builds and grows it pulls you along with it, morphing and changing all the way through but never feeling forced or contrite.

This single shows just how far Lenzman has come as a producer. His signature style is ever present, never in your face or desperate for your attention, this is mature music, impeccably put together and effortlessly delivered and promises incredible things for Lenzman’s album later in the year.

Drum&BassArena Evolution: The cutting edge and future sounds of DNB from the scene’s biggest artists. From Pendulum and Chase & Status taking basslines to the charts, to the underground sounds of Jubei, Noisia and Rockwell, the scene is thriving across the spectrum.

So on Evolution we take you from the euphoric vocal-led anthems of Danny Byrd to the technical beats of Icicle’s Dreadnaught and back to rowdy dancefloor weapons from Twisted Individual and DJ Hazard. We hit you with the epic, panoramic basslines of Loadstar then take it back down with the beautiful orchestral strings of S.P.Y’s by your side.

Nearly 20 years deep, Drum & Bass has evolved and is as relevant, and as crucial to the dance music scene as ever.
