A statue of French general Joseph Gallieni is spray-painted with the words “Responsible State” and “In a Museum” as protesters in several countries continue to question the existence of colonial symbols in public spaces. General Gallieni, a colonial administrator, played a central role in the expansion of the French Empire with particularly brutal methods.
