Meet The Stylist Who Made Over The NBA

Rachel Johnson is the stylist who took LeBron James from NBA all-star to fashion superstar. James and Johnson’s influence spread throughout the NBA and bled into other sports. Johnson’s work with athletes has helped add diversity and inclusivity to the fashion industry.

Following is a transcript of the video:

Rachel Johnson: My name is Rachel Johnson. I am a celebrity wardrobe stylist and the CEO and president of the Thomas Faison Agency.

Narrator: Throughout her career, Rachel Johnson has turned all-star athletes into fashion superstars. She’s styled household names like LeBron James, Victor Cruz, Cam Newton, and Amar’e Stoudemire, and she’s widely credited with making over the NBA.

Cam Newton: Watching basketball games, you get a different idea when you start seeing just as many cameras covering the postgame as the walk-up as vice versa for any other sport, too.

Narrator: But before she connected the fashion world with the sports world, Johnson pursued a degree in education.

Johnson: I was two years into getting my degree to teach high school English when I met a gentleman named Groovy Lou who worked for P. Diddy, and he told me that there were black women who were responsible for creating images for celebrities. So, as soon as Groovy told me that this could be a viable career path for me, I knew that that’s what I wanted to do.

Narrator: After college, she worked for Essence Magazine then moved into styling musicians and eventually met Jalen Rose.

Johnson: So Jalen was my first entry into the athlete world, and it was a beautiful way to enter the business because I was able to understand the mentality of an athlete. So the very next athlete I started working with was LeBron James, and I met him through Jay-Z, and working with LeBron is what really helped to completely change the way that the NBA dresses.

I knew that in order for LeBron to be respected from a style standpoint, that he needed to be wearing recognizable, historic brands. Coming from a fashion standpoint where they just didn’t understand men of this stature, they didn’t understand necessarily the athletic world, I had to bring these two worlds together in a way that both of them could understand each other’s language. So my goal was to bring him to these fashion houses and have looks created for him so that when he had press opportunities and opportunities to be in front of the camera, he was wearing what any other well-dressed actor would be wearing.

Narrator: James became a global superstar. His exposure and Johnson’s influence eventually permeated throughout the rest of the NBA, but Johnson’s work didn’t stop there.

Johnson: I had been going to Europe. I had been going to Paris and Milan to attend fashion shows, and when I was there, I realized there was a huge gap. There was a huge opportunity there for my clients, for athletes, for black men in particular to attend these shows because there was absolutely no diversity present at all. Victor was my first client who was brave enough to attack the European market.

Narrator: And Johnson and Cruz succeeded. Cruz became the face of Givenchy’s fall and winter 2015 campaign.

Johnson: On a day-to-day basis, my goals are to help build relationships with my clients and fashion brands, and once I figure out where it is that they want to be placed and how they want to be perceived by the public, that gives me the insight that I need to understand what brands I should connect them with, which events they should be attending, and then obviously what they’re wearing.

Victor Cruz: I call her my fairy fashion godmother because whenever I have a question or a debate about what I want to wear, how I want to wear it, I’ll ask her.

Narrator: Her work continues to break down barriers and spread throughout popular culture.

Newton: For so long, the football player stigma has been this big, strong, masculine guy who may not have any style. All he just wants to do is just hit somebody, but now it’s just a different demographic of how people approach athleticism in different ways.

Johnson: So these last 10 years of focusing on athletes and really bringing the two worlds of fashion and athletes together has been to heighten the awareness of fashion designers and brands, to help them be more inclusive and create sizes that are available for everyone.

Richard Sherman Responds To ‘Shut Up And Dribble’

NFL cornerback Richard Sherman stopped by Business Insider and shared his thoughts on the recent scandal with Fox News anchor Laura Ingraham saying LeBron James should “shut up and dribble” and stay out of politics. Following is a transcript of the video.

Richard Sherman:  People try to box players in and I guess for their own comfort put them in a category so that they — you know, they watch LeBron James for entertainment. Not for his opinion. is what the person who told him to shut up and play basketball would say. And I would argue that sometimes the people that are telling these players to shut up and dribble the basketball are less informed than players are.

And just because you sit behind a news desk or you sit behind any desk and spew off a few facts that somebody else probably looked up for you does not make you any more qualified than anyone else to have these conversations. Especially on the impact of these protests and the social climate that everybody has to live in.

How Mindfulness Helps This Top Congressman Stay Calm In DC

After going on a mindfulness retreat in 2008, Ohio Congressman Tim Ryan has become a vocal advocate in DC for the practice. Speaking with Business Insider, Ryan explains the benefits mindfulness can have for veterans, schoolchildren and average Americans.

Tim Ryan announced in April 2019 that he’ll be running for President of the United States in the 2020 election.

Following is a transcript of the video:

Rep. Tim Ryan: We live in a time in the United States where everybody is busy, whether you’re a congressman or you’re a single mom with a couple of kids that’s working a swing shift. We’re all scrambling now and living under a lot of stress, a lot of anxiety.

The practice of mindfulness is paying attention to the present moment. While your mind may try to go to the past or the future, you try to discipline your mind and to increase your awareness of the present moment, what’s going on around you, but also what’s going on inside of you, so you can better understand your own habits, your own emotional states.

And the benefits are remarkable and being proven more and more each day by the research. They reduce stress, increase focus, keep you healthier because it boosts your immune system, make better decisions.

In 2008, Tim Ryan signed up for a mindfulness retreat, hoping to get a break from his exhausting schedule as a three-term congressman in Ohio.

It really is a profound experience to start to see what happens when you don’t have your cell phone, you’re not writing letters or doing anything for work, and some of these retreats you don’t even talk over the course of a few days.

You think of a gallon milk jug with sand and water in it. You shake it up and you can’t really see, it’s blurry, but you set it on the table and over time all the sand will settle to the bottom. That’s kind of what happens to your own mind, it’s just your mind begins to settle. And you don’t even realize how much the voice in your head is constantly going and how tiring that can be.

Kobe Bryant and LeBron James and Michael Jordan and all of these people, many CEOs across the country are using these kinds of practices because they’re very simple but very, very powerful.

Ryan realized that a space for contemplative practice was missing, not just on Capitol Hill, but also in his community. So he set out to change that. Now there is a Quiet Time Caucus every Monday that he often leads before Congress votes, and he has raised over $3.6 million in funding for mindfulness research and programs.

Veterans are getting off sometimes eight or ten medications because they started to do some of these practices that have helped them deal with their post-traumatic stress in a healthier way. So that reduces the cost at the VA for what we have to pay in medication, but it also gets these vets their life back.

It’s been great for schoolkids, they live in violent homes, violent neighborhoods. Practices like mindfulness help them get out of the fight or flight response and be able to access parts of their brain that allow them to make better decisions, allow them to focus and pay attention and it increases their cognitive abilities.

The best advice I can give is just to start. Set an alarm for five minutes and just turn the TV off and turn the radio off, and turn every electronic device you have off and just literally spend five minutes in quiet, in silence. By just doing it a few minutes everyday that you will start to respond to things as opposed to react to things, and just get a little bit more space between something happening to you and how you react to it.

LeBron, Cavaliers cram onto NY subway en route to game vs Knicks

Basketball star LeBron James and his teammates at the Cavaliers opt to ride the New York subway to their game against the New York Knicks, a change of pace from their usual private bus trips. According to James, who captured the entire commute on camera, it was the first time he had ever ridden the subway.

Gun Control Advocates Are Hoping Ballot Initiatives Get More Done Than Congress (HBO)

On Election Day, a record four states will vote on gun initiatives. Gun control advocates haven’t had much luck getting legislation through Congress or state legislatures, so they’re turning to the initiative process in hopes letting the voter, not politicians, decide policy.

Among them is ballot initiative 1491 in Washington state that would allow family members or police to get a court order to prevent a person from getting a gun who might be a danger to themselves or to others.

Backing the initiative is Marilyn Balcerak, whose 23-year-old severely autistic son James purchased a gun at a local supermarket and murdered his stepsister Brianna Smith with it before taking his own life. Prior to the shootings, Balcerak had contacted police in to ask if there was anything she could do to prevent James from ever purchasing a weapon. They told her it wasn’t possible unless he committed a crime first.

Supporters have raised more than $4 million and have the backing of tech billionaires Steve Ballmer and Paul Allen, but the NRA is strongly opposed, and even the ACLU has concerns that the initiative could infringe on due process for gun owners. Balcerak just hopes it saves lives.
