Demolished Palestinian house becomes conflict symbol | AFP

The piles of rubble that Latifa Naji used to call home have become an unlikely symbol in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The two-storey cement home in the Al-Amari refugee camp in the occupied West Bank has been demolished by the Israeli army four times, most recently this month, as punishment for attacks carried out by the 71-year-old’s sons. For Palestinians the desire to keep rebuilding symbolises an ability to withstand Israeli collective punishment and a refusal to be forced from their homes.

Israel Breaking New Ground: VICE News Tonight on HBO

One of the most urgent questions for America’s Israel policy is Israel’s plan to build more new settlements in the West Bank, further encroaching upon Palestinian territory. During his meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu last week, U.S. President Donald Trump indicated he wants settlement-building to slow down, but that doesn’t seem to be part of Netanyahu’s plan. Since Trump’s inauguration a month ago, Israel has announced the creation of 6,000 new settler units and legalized thousands of outposts.

VICE News went to the West Bank to find out what it takes for a settlement to be authorized and what this rapid expansion will mean for the prospects of the stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

The Ultra Orthodox vs. The IDF: Israel’s Other Religious War

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News

Since Israel’s inception, the Haredi — ultra-Orthodox adherents of Judaism —have been exempt from the country’s military conscription laws. But their growing population, coupled with their high unemployment rate and dependence on state benefits, sparked outrage within the country’s secular majority. After years of demanding that the Haredi share the responsibility of serving in the armed forces, the Israeli government passed an unprecedented law in March 2014 that requires Haredi men to serve in the military.

The decision resulted in major opposition from the Ultra Orthodox community, from violent protests to religious leaders demanding that no one should comply. VICE News travels to Israel to speak with hardline members and leaders of the Ultra Orthodox community as well as soldiers in the Netzah Yehuda, the IDF’s Ultra Orthodox Battalion, to get their take on the government’s decision.

Kidnappings and Killings Spark Demonstrations in Israel: Rockets and Revenge (Dispatch 1)

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News

On June 12, three Israeli teens were kidnapped while hitchhiking through the West Bank city of Hebron. In response, the Israeli army launched a severe crackdown in the West Bank, arresting hundreds of Palestinians. Two weeks later, the bodies of the Israeli teens were found and Israel blamed their murders on the militant group Hamas. Then last week, the body of a 16-year-old Palestinian boy was found in East Jerusalem after being burned alive in a revenge attack carried out by right-wing Israelis.

Inside Israel and throughout the West Bank, the killings set off massive demonstrations the likes of which have not been seen since the Second Intifada more than a decade ago. Meanwhile, the Israeli military has been carrying out airstrikes over the besieged Gaza Strip in an effort to root out Hamas, which has launched hundreds of homemade rockets over the southern border of Israel during the past several weeks. Despite mounting criticism and civilian causalities, Israel has vowed to increase its military operation in Gaza in the coming days.

VICE News is in Israel and Palestine amid the mounting tension as Israelis and Palestinians prepare for the next round of violent confrontations. In this first dispatch, we go to a protest in the mixed Israeli-Palestinian town of Acre and speak with Palestinians intent on using peaceful means to make their voices heard.
