They Come For Us At Night: China’s Vanishing Muslims (Full Report)

China’s Uighur minority live a dystopian nightmare of constant surveillance and brutal policing. At least one million of them are believed to be living in what the U.N. described as a “massive internment camp that is shrouded in secrecy,” while many Uighur children are taken to state-run orphanages where they’re indoctrinated into Chinese customs.

The Uighurs’ plight has largely been kept hidden from the world, thanks to China’s aggressive attempts to suppress the story at all costs.

VICE News’ Isobel Yeung posed as a tourist to gain unprecedented access to China’s western Xinjiang region, which has been nearly unreachable by journalists.

She and our crew experienced China’s Orwellian surveillance and harassment first-hand during their time in Xinjiang, and captured chilling hidden-camera footage of eight Uighur men detained by police in the middle of the night. We spoke with members of the Uighur community about their experience in these camps, and about China’s attempts to silence their history and lifestyle under the cover of darkness.

Putin’s Crimea & The War At Home | VICE on HBO (Trailer)

In 2014, Russia seized the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea in one of the most brazen annexations of territory since World War II. Aside from economic sanctions, that land grab has largely been forgotten by the international community. More than four years on, Russia’s grip on Crimea seems stronger than ever. Isobel Yeung investigates how Crimeans are really faring under Russian control, and how Ukrainians are clinging to the hope of reunification.

Then…

On average, three women in the United States are killed each day by a current or former partner. With firearms greatly increasing the odds of homicide inside homes with reports of domestic violence, some states are making efforts to seize firearms from those with orders of protection against them. Meanwhile, other states have passed legislation making it easier for those who file protection orders to carry a weapon without a license. We sent Gianna Toboni to meet the women working to fix the shortcomings of a legal system that often fails to protect women.

How Truth Lost Its Meaning In Trump’s America: VICE on HBO, Full Episode

In Trump’s America, half the population lives in a world where the “crooked media” tells “fake news” made up of “alternative facts,” while the other half fights to maintain public trust in traditional media.

Much of this stems from the parallel online universe that led up to the 2016 election. Clinton and Trump supporters really don’t listen to each other on Twitter, according to an analysis from the Electome project at the MIT Media Lab provided exclusively to VICE News.

“At least on Twitter, we see that there is a separation of where the journalists, and who the journalists are following, and no one is really listening or plugged into this Trump supporter graph.” Eugene Yi, a data-scientists at the lab told VICE News.

Formerly fringe bloggers, like Milo Yiannopolus and Mike Cernovich, seized the golden opportunity to speak directly to Trump supporters and flooded the internet with false information.

The now-infamous data targeting company Cambridge Analytica allegedly used mass amounts of personal information on the internet to manipulate voters, spreading pro-Trump news, no matter the factual evidence, which may have helped win the election for him.

With Trump in office, conservative new media and the mainstream are now at war over who is “fake news,” and a record low of 32 percent of Americans trust the press. And President Trump’s personal crusade against the traditional press has only deepened the public divide.

But, “the president doesn’t get to decide what the truth is,” CNN’s Jim Acosta, a common target of Trump’s criticisms, told VICE News. VICE’s Isobel Yeung meets the people on the frontlines in the battle for truth.

How Japan Is Responding To Fukushima Five Years Later (HBO)

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has announced plans to clean up Fukushima, the site of a massive 2011 nuclear disaster, and move former residents back by spring 2017. But not everyone wants to go back.

“It’s not possible in my lifetime,” Katsutaka Idogawa, former mayor of Futaba Prefecture, told VICE News correspondent Isobel Yeung. “The radiation doesn’t go away that easily.”

Radioactive materials remain hazardous for hundreds of years, but just five years have passed since the 2011 Fukushima meltdown. Japan’s effort to clean up more than 600 square miles is estimated to cost the government over $180 billion.

Japan Is Sitting On A Massive Geothermal Reserve: VICE News Tonight

“Somewhere in Japan, a Japanese person is always in an onsen,” onsen owner Shunji Shibatani told VICE News correspondent Isobel Yeung, referring to the country’s traditional hot spring spas. “Onsen is an inseparable part of Japanese culture.”

Hot spring spas are cultural institutions that have been around for more than a thousand years. Today, there are more than 3,000 onsens across the country, which service 120 million people every year, or roughly the entire population of Japan. The owners are facing pressure to share the geothermal reserves that heat their spas to help power the country.

After the Fukushima meltdown, the Japanese government faced significant pressure to shut down all of the country’s nuclear reactors. Without nuclear power, the country gets almost 87% of its energy needs from expensive and polluting fossil fuels.

“We have enough to power 20 big nuclear power plants,” said professor Sachio Ehara, chairman of the Geothermal Information Institute. “Japan is a land full of volcanoes.”

With nearly 200 volcanoes, Japan has one of the largest geothermal reserves in the world. If this naturally occurring heat were to be harnessed and converted into power, it could generate 10% of Japan’s energy needs right away.

“Geothermal energy and onsens will never co-exist because geothermals would take these resources, ” said Masao Oyama, chairman of the Japan Spa Association, a powerful collective of spa owners who lobby for the $26 billion industry. “This energy source will be gone in 30 or 50 years.”
