Iraq opens 2nd camp to cope with Syrian Kurd influx | AFP

The United Nations opens a new section of a camp for the displaced in Iraqi Kurdistan to host refugees fleeing Turkish troops in northeast Syria. The offensive has killed dozens of civilians, mainly on the Kurdish side, and prompted an exodus of tens of thousands, in the latest humanitarian crisis of Syria’s eight-year civil war.

The Fight For a Kurdish State I VICE on HBO

The Kurds have played an instrumental role in the fight against ISIS. Although their case for independence is rarely made, the Kurds are the largest ethnic group in the world without a state of their own. They’re also one of the only peoples to suffer an attempted genocide since the Holocaust.

In Iraqi Kurdistan, Vice’s Ben Anderson met those involved in the fight from the frontline to the Kurd’s former guerrilla president to ask why the group recently voted for independence and what hopes they have for achieving a state of their own.

Kurds sacrificed enough for independence, Baghdad won’t stop the referendum – Iraqi Kurdistan PM

The war with ISIS in Iraq is drawing to a close, but the day after will be no easier. With Iraqi Kurdistan going for an independence referendum, Baghdad may not be eager to accept the vote. The already volatile situation in the Middle East might be destabilized even further by the establishment of a Kurdish region – or, perhaps, help stabilize it instead. Will the price of Kurdish independence be too high? We ask Prime Minister of Iraqi Kurdistan Nechirvan Barzani.

Until the US stepped in with airstrikes, the Islamic State’s rapid advances threatened the Iraqi Kurdistan capital of Erbil, and seemed set to dash the Kurdish peshmerga’s reputation as fearless warriors. With American warplanes circling overhead and constantly striking Islamic State positions, the front line quickly stabilized, and the peshmerga slowly began to recover ground. Now the scene was set for battle, and the recapture of the strategic Mosul Dam.

VICE News travelled with a Kurdish official to Khazer, near Mosul, and towards the front line of the fight between the Islamic State and peshmerga fighters.
