Statue of Liberty Banner Hangers Arrested

Several people who hung a banner calling for abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement from the Statue of Liberty’s pedestal on the Fourth of July have been arrested, and authorities say a person is scaling the statue’s base. (July 4)

Hundreds Protest Bay Area ICE Arrests

Here Legally, Detained Indefinitely

Alex Lora, 34, was born in the Dominican Republic but raised in Brooklyn; his mother brought him to the U.S. legally when he was seven. He had a green card and no recent trouble with the law, so he assumed the issue was a misunderstanding. He was confused when multiple vehicles pulled up on the block and what seemed like a small army of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents poured out into the street. The next thing he knew, he says, he was shoved up against a light pole and told he would soon be deported.

VICE News met with Alex Lora to discuss the upcoming Supreme Court case that could give detained immigrants a shot at freedom.
