Barbara Corcoran Explains How To Ask For A Raise

At IGNITION, Business Insider asked real estate mogul and “Shark Tank” host Barbara Corcoran to share her advice on how to successfully ask your boss for a raise. Corcoran also talked about what you should do if you receive an offer from another company.

Following is a transcript:

Barbara Corcoran: If you want to get a raise, and particularly if you’re a woman who wants to get a raise, women don’t ask for raises I can tell you. I’ve employed thousands of women over my life. They do not ask for raises unless they absolutely must, and men ask all the time. And so, what the smartest thing to do is, first of all, make an appointment to ask for a raise, even if your expectation isn’t that you’re gonna get it. At least ask for it, because that sets you up for the next meeting where you’ll likely get it.

And the smartest thing to do is to walk in with a list of your responsibilities when you started at the company, and then also the list of things you’ve taken on since you started. And simply make the boss aware that you have a lot more responsibility. You’re delighted to take it on, give me more, but I’d like to be compensated and to name a number you’d like.

Most women, when they work up to the point where they’ll ask for a raise, they won’t give a number. “I’d like to get a raise.” Men will walk in and say, “I’d like to get a raise. I’d like it to be around 10, 15 percent.”

No qualms. So, if you’re a timid woman, I think the smart thing to do is ask, “What would a man do?” And walk in thinking like a man. If you don’t get the raise, you have to ask, “What would merit a raise?” So that when you come back the next time, you could say, “Hey, this is what I’ve done,” “I’d like to get that raise.”

When someone has come to me and said they got another offer for a lot more money from somewhere else, and it’s not followed up with, “So, goodbye,” they’re looking for something from me. I never try to buy their loyalty because I haven’t earned their loyalty, obviously, and they’re on their way out the door, I’m not gonna stop them with more money. They’re already off my list. I can’t wait for them to go out that door.

It’s perfectly acceptable to go to your boss and say, “You know, I’m a little surprised. I got an offer for a lot more money, but I’m not taking it because I love this business. But I’m really wondering, could you level with me as to my future prospects here?”

That’s a great opener. And it’s not insulting and it’s not threatening. And guess what? You’ll get the best out of that boss. Very, very different than saying, “You want to pay up?” The tone is entirely different. One, the boss wants to measure up. The other style, the boss wants to boot you out that door. I think the piece you have to put in is, “I got a great offer, I love working here and I plan to stay, but it brings on the table my question, what do you think my prospects here in the future might be?” That’s pretty fair. If I were a boss, I would go out of my way to think of how I could push you ahead, if I value you. And if my response instead was, “Well I’m happy to hear about it, but you know, we pay you fairly and you have good responsibilities and we’re pretty happy, so do what you want,” or something like that, I would know I am not valued, and I would take the other job because the one thing you must be in any position you are, male, female, whatever level you are, is you must be valued and appreciated to be promoted.

It’s a great way to go in and take a litmus test as to how you are valued in that boss’ eyes, and your boss has more to do with your future than the company you’re working for, your responsibilities and everything else. If they love you, they will push you ahead. I had so many people come and ask for raises over the years. Of course, mostly men. My theory as a boss is, you get ahead of your valued employees and you raise them before they ever get to ask. Because employees will kill for you, if you can treat them with that kind of reverence and respect and prove it by paying them more. They’ll kill for you. They’re loyal forever. And I’ve always been very lucky to be surrounded by people that are enormously loyal, and it’s no accident. Because I make sure I push money, recognition, whatever I have, opportunity, more valuable than raises. Bonuses, whatever it takes to make them feel “I am loved.” That’s what everybody wants.

What ‘Dilly Dilly’ Means — And How Bud Light Came Up With Its Viral Campaign

If you’ve seen or heard the phrase “Dilly Dilly” at your local pub or on social media in the last few weeks, you can thank Bud Light for turning the phrase into a cultural phenomenon. The company launched a series of ads created by the Wieden+Kennedy ad agency that has gone viral, thanks to their constant appearances during commercial breaks in NFL and college football games.

Recently at Business Insider’s IGNITION conference in New York, we got to chat with the man ultimately responsible for the “Dilly Dilly” campaign: Anheuser-Busch InBev Chief Marketing Officer Miguel Patricio. We asked him about the origin of the campaign and — with the Super Bowl looming — if the brand has any plans to make any new “Dilly Dilly” ads. Following is a transcript of the video.

Graham Flanagan: What the hell does “Dilly Dilly” mean?

Miguel Patricio: “Dilly Dilly” doesn’t mean anything. That’s the beauty of it. I think that we all need our moments of nonsense and fun. And I think that “Dilly Dilly,” in a way, represents that. A lot of people asked me, “How did you approve that?”

[You can thank this man for the “Dilly Dilly” campaign. He’s the Chief Marketing Officer of AB InBev]

To tell you the truth, we never expected this to be so successful. It didn’t test that well. We did that ad, actually, because of – the new season of “Game of Thrones” coming, but when we tested, it didn’t test that well. We said, “Consumers will get it.”

And especially with repetition. We have a chance here for this to become big. So, we went against the research and we gave a chance to “Dilly Dilly” and we are so happy!

[The spot was created by the Wieden+Kennedy ad agency]

I think that one of the proofs of success,  nowadays, from a cultural standpoint, is when you go to Amazon and you don’t do anything, there are people already selling t-shirts. Two weeks ago, I went on Amazon. There were like ten different types of “Dilly Dilly” t-shirts. I said “Yes! That’s it!”

It becomes a cultural currency.

Flanagan: You’re suing all those people, right?

Patricio: No, no. We want everybody to “Dilly Dilly” in their life, so no problem. We are gonna bring more fun, more Dilly Dillys … Super Bowl is pretty close. Maybe we’ll surprise you with a Dilly Dilly soon. I don’t know. Maybe!

Tucker Carlson: I Always Vote For The Most Corrupt Candidate

During an interview at Business Insider’s IGNITION conference in New York on Thursday, Fox News’ Tucker Carlson says he doesn’t vote in the presidential election and explains why he always votes for the most corrupt mayoral candidate. Following is a transcript of the video.

Nicholas Carlson: Who’d you vote for and which party are you registered to?

Tucker Carlson: I don’t want to give the party thing because it’s actually misleading. I never vote so that’s the truth. I didn’t vote this time, I never do. “Then you don’t have the right to give your opinion” — yeah, I do. And in fact, I do.

I’m registered with a party that I sincerely despise because I think it’s really a force for bad in this country and it’s the Democratic party. But I’m registered because I live in the district, it’s a one-party state and the one election I always vote in is the mayor’s race because it matters. I own property there, I race for children there. If you live in the city, I think it’s worth voting for an election so I always do.

I always vote for the more corrupt candidate over the idealist. Always. The person who will just like be happy taking payoffs from developers and leave me alone. This is like a meaningful decision in my life. Every four years, there’s some guy who’s like, “I’m going to make your life better!” I vote against that person every single time. You know what I mean? It’s usually some progressive candidate who’s got big plans for me, and so, I just vote for the status quo, corrupt criminal operation that runs the city and I’m really happy with that.

Nick Bell On If Snap CEO Evan Spiegel Is The Next Steve Jobs

During an interview at Business Insider’s IGNITION conference in New York Nick Bell, Snapchat’s VP of Content, explains how Evan Spiegel sold him on Snapchat. The following is a transcript of the video.

Alyson Shontell: You know him better than anyone in this room. Evan Spiegel has been compared to Steve Jobs, Picasso…people wonder if he is the next great creative CEO. Do you think that he’s the next Steve Jobs or is it overblown?

Nick Bell: The reason I joined Snapchat initially was because of Evan. I was really happy at News Corp, I had been there for 6 years. I was having a great time. I met Evan, he sold me the vision for Snap, if you like, and don’t forget this is at a point when they just turned down pretty significant offers from Google and Facebook and all of my colleagues and friends and family were telling me I was an idiot to join the small startup in Venice.

And Evan sold me the vision to Snap which was a 5,10,15 year vision and talked about the power of the camera, etc, and I was kind of blown away. And I feel very fortunate to be able to work with him on a daily basis and the one thing I will say is about Evan is not only is he able to have a long-term vision and think about the world and it in a very different way but he’s also amazing at the actual granular design aspect of that and that’s something is fairly rare and I just feel very fortunate to be a part of that team and a part of the journey.

Why Megyn Kelly Left Fox News

During an interview at Business Insider’s IGNITION conference in New York on Wednesday, NBC News’ Megyn Kelly reflected on departure from Fox News. Following is a transcript of the video.

Megyn Kelly: It was a combination of a lot of things. First and foremost, I was not seeing my children grow up. You know, I would leave for work at 3, 3:30, which is exactly when your kids get home from school. You know they had aged into that school schedule. When I started The Kelly File, they were all they were 4, 3, and newborn. By the time I left they were two of the three were in school till 3. So I wasn’t seeing them I wasn’t seeing 2 out of my 3 children Monday through Friday except for that 45 minutes in the morning or you’re just yelling at them to get their backpack and their sneakers and get out, which is not meaningful. So, I wasn’t happy. It wasn’t good enough You know, that I’m fine being a working parent, I need to be a working parent I love my work. That wasn’t good enough, the balance had tipped too far. Professionally, I really felt like there was no more growth for me at Fox News. That I had done all the things I wanted to do there.

Megyn Kelly Heard Rumors About Matt Lauer And ‘Hoped It Wasn’t True’

During an interview at Business Insider’s IGNITION conference in New York on Wednesday, NBC’s Megyn Kelly told us that she’d heard rumors about Matt Lauer, but she did not know the extent of the allegations until Wednesday. Following is a transcript of the video.

Alyson Shontell: We gotta address the elephant in the room first. Matt Lauer … holy cow.

When you woke up this morning, did you know that this was brewing? What were your thoughts?

Megyn Kelly: No, I didn’t. You know, I …

Shontell: Not at all? Not like … “Variety” and “The New York Times” have been working on stories. You don’t hear about these things?

Kelly: So, I didn’t have any official knowledge. But because of the work I do, and the stories I cover, and the connections I have in the industry, I have a general feel for… I mean I knew the Charlie Rose thing was coming.

And I had heard rumors about Matt, but that’s all they were. And my feeling on it was a rumor is not the same as reportable fact, and it was also that I hear a lot of rumors about myself too that are completely untrue. And when you’re a public figure, people do make up things about you and put them in print.

So I had no inside knowledge at all, but I knew people were sniffing around the issue. And hoped it wasn’t true and wouldn’t have been surprised if none of that had materialized, and he had a long… you know… and enjoyable last whatever, however many years he wanted to be at the “Today Show.”
