Jules Stobbs and Myrtle Clarke
…better known as The Dagga Couple, have been fighting for the legalization of cannabis in South Africa since 2010. Through the courts they hope to enforce the lifting of the ban. In 2017 their long-awaited trial against the state, ‘The Trial of the Plant’, took place, with a leading role for the English professor David Nutt. With their organizations Fields of Green for All and Join the Queue, they stand up for compatriots who are being persecuted for cannabis.

01 Q&A Live interview Henk de Vries and Ben Dronkers

Q & A / Live interview Henk de Vries (founder Bull Dog) and Ben Dronkers (Founder Sensi Seeds) interview by Derrick Bergman (festival organiser, VOC)
Hosted by Derrick Bergman, president of VOC and organizer Cannabis liberation Day
Henk de vries
As founder of The Bulldog, Henk de Vries is not only a living legend but also the owner of the first global cannabis brand in modern history. Since he started in 1975 in a basement on the Oudezijds Voorburgwal in Amsterdam with The Bulldog, his brainchild has grown into an empire with global fame. Like no other, Henk de Vries put his stamp on the phenomenon that according to Professor Egbert Tellegen should have been proclaimed ‘the most important Dutch social innovation of the past half century’: the coffeeshop.

30 years of Sensi Seeds: Hemp for victory

Celebrating milestones of the cannabis industry

In October 2015, one of the biggest names in the cannabis industry celebrated two huge milestones. Check out this special report from Cannabis News Network.

30 years of Sensi Seeds

On Thursday the 8th of October 2015, important figures from the Spain and international cannabis communities gathered in the Hash Marihuana Cáñamo & Hemp Museum of Barcelona, for the opening of a special exhibition: ‘Grow On: 30 years of Sensi Seeds’.
Sensi Seeds was founded in 1985 by cannabis entrepreneur and visionary Ben Dronkers, who also founded the Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum in Amsterdam and Barcelona, and the industrial hemp factory HempFlax. This year, Sensi Seeds, which grew to become the largest cannabis genetics seed bank in the world, is celebrating its 30th anniversary, with among other things, a very special exhibition in their Barcelona museum.

The exposition displays the rich history of this famous company that created legendary cannabis strains such as Jack Herer, Black Domina, Skunk #1 and Northern Lights. ‘Grow On: 30 years of Sensi Seeds’ will be open to visitors until May 1st, 2016.

HempFlax invested 5 million euros in Romania

And there was more to celebrate for Sensi Seeds. On the 16th of October, its sister company HempFlax opened a brand new factory in Romania. A new and very special chapter for the company that aimed to relaunch the European hemp industry 20 years ago, and is successfully doing so.

The future is looking bright!

Foul play: The criminalization of Dutch coffeeshop owners

Cannabis News Network presents you with a follow-up on the dramatic case of Johan van Laarhoven. This former Dutch coffeeshop entrepreneur and his wife are still being imprisoned in Thailand under horrific conditions.

The reason for their imprisonment is an investigation initiated by the Dutch government, who is accusing Van Laarhoven of money laundering. Van Laarhoven having retired to Thailand, the public prosecutor triggered the Thai government to investigate Johan van Laarhoven too, which led to his and his wife’s imprisonment for over thirteen months.

Whereas Dutch coffeeshops are tolerated to sell cannabis under certain circumstances, purchasing their stock remains illegal, therefore forcing coffeeshops to operate in a gray area. So is Van Laarhoven really to blame?

Because the Thai authorities have no idea about the situation in The Netherlands and the Dutch way of dealing with cannabis was not explained by the Dutch attorney general, a Thai delegation was invited over to Holland to have a good look at the local approach.

Check out this update from Cannabis News Network, including a report on the Thai delegation visiting coffeeshops and the Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum in Amsterdam.
