Greece restarted regular ferry services to its islands Monday, and cafes and restaurants were also back open for business as the country accelerated efforts to salvage its tourism season. (May 25)

In Greece, volunteers help keep underfunded COVID-19 hospitals running

Greece’s main hospital for COVID-19 patients is also the focus of a hands-on training program for dozens of medical students who volunteered to relieve hard-pressed doctors from simpler duties while gaining a close peek at the front lines as medical history is being made.
Although Greece has a low COVID-19 infection rate, hospitals are struggling after years of austerity imposed during a financial crisis and three successive international bailouts.

Since the coronavirus pandemic, the “Makerspace” workshop in Darmstadt has been turned into a hub for dropping off plastic parts made at home by volunteers and used to assemble face shields sent to health workers across Germany and even as far off as a refugee camp in Greece. The so-called German MakerVsVirus network — extending into Austria and Switzerland thanks to the shared language — gathers about 7,000 enthusiasts who are using their own 3D printers or other gadgets to produce much coveted medical gear.

Sixteen-year-old Greek graffiti artist S.F. paints a mural inspired by COVID-19 on the roof of his apartment block in Athens. The piece features an image of the virus pathogen and a message to stay home. S.F. has been making street art since 2011 and spends all of his allowance on supplies. As Greece is now under lockdown because of the pandemic he can no longer paint in public spaces so he sticks to his building rooftop.

Olympic flame reaches Japan amid doubt about games
