GONZO: We are all Florida man (E10)

GONZO reaches the end of their journey in the swampland in which America’s oldest continuous settlement resides – St. Augustine, Florida. Max and Stacy talk to a historian who tells them that much of ‘history’ is, in fact, the history of selling history. History, at least how it is taught at school, is often spun to put ourselves in the best light and so much of it is myth, or advertisement, rather than fact. But is erasing the negative truths about our history through tearing down monuments, for example, the best way to address the horrible things we have done as a nation? Or is providing context to historical texts, documents, buildings, and monuments a better idea? Confronting our history straight on and examining the consequences.

Max and Stacy also talk to a federal agent who says we need more dialogue over our shared history, no matter how bad it is, as a way to move forward rather than continuing to be stuck in the same partisan spot. Finally, Max and Stacy visit an alligator pit to understand the nature of the swamp that is at the heart of Trump’s America and the people, like Florida Man, who jump into that pit. The journey concludes with Max and Stacy chatting to ‘Hunter,’ a 2500-pound gator.

GONZO: The past is not even past (E9)

GONZO remains in New Orleans and continues chowing down on beignets with journalist, Max Blumenthal, who says that while Donald Trump has, indeed, energized ‘the basket of deplorables,’ his campaign slogan ‘Make America Great Again’ won the election because Hillary did represent the ‘winners’ of globalization post-Nafta and he had intentionally appealed to the ‘losers’ in places like Michigan. They also discuss the proliferation of conspiracy theories as unsurprising when the ordinary people of America are some of the most conspired against people in the world, including, for example, the Tuskegee syphilis experiment on African-American males from 1932 until 1972.

As they reminisce about the GONZO journey encountering ghosts on the trail, Blumenthal notes that Donald Trump is the perfect American ghost who brings all the dark ghosts of our past into one orange skinned, dead fox haired character who has so much energy it’s as if he’s powered by fish filets.

Later in the day, Max visits Dr. Clyde Robertson, director of African and African-American Studies at Southern University in New Orleans, to discuss the problem with our racist past that is not even past. Racism still haunts society and politics today as the nation went from slavery to Jim Crow to the prison industrial complex. They discuss the history of the Black Panthers in the area and the gentrification of the city in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Dr. Robertson also mentions that Barack Obama did not deliver a post-racial society as he kowtowed to special corporate interests instead. Finally, Max and Stacy head out toward Florida, passing through rain storms in Alabama and Mississippi.

GONZO: Street poets and beignets in Nola (E8)

GONZO heads into the home of fracking, Denton, Texas, to chat to Dr. Adam Briggle, author of ‘A Field Philosopher’s Guide to Fracking’. The idea of field philosophy is to take ideas about ethics and justice and bring it to the real world. Fracking is a justice issue and both the politics and the economics of the alleged bonanza turned out to be a big dud and a land use planning nightmare. They talk about the philosophy of hubris and narcissism and find that fracking is about the lesson of Frankenstein – we create something without considering the wider ramifications and without plans to deal with the out of control nature of our inventions. Denton voted to ban fracking but the state government then intervened with legislation to prevent citizens from having the democratic right of local self-determination on such matters related to Big Oil. We are waiting for a tech fix but fracking was a tech fix to declining oil reserves. Max and Dr. Briggle ride their bike off into the distance with plans to go form the church of no fracking.

Max and Stacy leave Texas on the way to New Orleans while discussing the frackers versus ranchers battle brewing in Texas as each vie for limited water resources. In Nola, they discuss the aftermath of about Hurricane Katrina which Obama’s education secretary considered the best thing to ever happen to public education in America as it opened up an entire city to the charter school movement which, in turn, opened the city up to privatisation and gentrification. They also discuss the legacy of Huey Long and how we now dismantle public infrastructure rather than build it. Blumenthal mentions ‘Cancer Alley’ in one of the first town of freed persons where cancer rates now are so high due to industrial pollution. They also ask, “How did we end up with Trump?” And the role of John Hagee and the evangelical Christians in putting him in power in order to get them the Supreme Court, which they now effectively own. Finally, Stacy and the two Maxes eat beignets, talk about the swamp expanding, the legacy of Bourdain and then talk to some street poets who compose a poem for GONZO.

GONZO: American Stonehenge (E7)

GONZO arrives at Billy the Kid’s gravesite on the former estate of one of Max’s distant ancestors in Fort Sumner, New Mexico. They discuss the path to evil that the fight for survival might bring, whether in the case of the fictional Walter White of Breaking Bad or the Wild West mythical character that was the ‘Boy Bandit King.’ They also look at Max’s distant relative’s tombstone and note that the ‘great builders’ of America are no longer with us, but, in fact, we have a more locust private equity model of the great fortunes going to those who dismantle and hollow out all that was built before them. Max and Stacy then drive out for Denton, Texas but first make a detour to Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas. They discuss ‘American Stonehenge,’ and whether or not it is art, an homage to the time when America made great cars and now it is all run into the ground. In Denton, TX, they meet banker and author, Mitch Feierstein, on an old, rickety bridge. They discuss the myths of America being Big Oil once again as figments of our imagination built upon a real pile of unpayable debt. Mitch also talks about his experience with the rise of anti-Semitism and where the fault lies. After some serious conversation, the group heads out for some Texas brisket.

A Family Man and Anti-Hero GONZO (E6)

GONZO arrives in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where tourism is booming thanks to the latest, greatest American anti-hero, Walter White, the fictional high-school teacher turned meth kingpin in the hit TV series, ‘Breaking Bad.’ After a brief stop at Los Pollos Hermanos, they visit the laundry service where the fictional labs were filmed for the series. They discuss the family man who turned evil under a healthcare system like the lawless and dangerous Wild West that drove pioneers and cowboys to become the quickest-draw gunslinger possible. Max then visits the Candy Lady in downtown Albuquerque to talk about the ‘consequences of our choices.’ She believes we cannot forget the past but that we must also remember that it brought us to today, and we need to move beyond all that is tearing us apart. They also discuss the high costs of Obamacare and the financial hardships it has brought. GONZO then drives out of town toward Billy the Kid’s gravesite.

GONZO: American anti-heroes, American ghosts (E5)

GONZO drives toward Flagstaff, Arizona, with a stop at the indescribable Grand Canyon along the way. The drive takes them through wide open countryside where native Americans still live. When they get into Flagstaff, they are given a guided ghost tour by Johnny, a local who is a cowboy during the day. Stacy asks why there aren’t so many ghosts in Europe, and he reckons that it’s because we promote them and earn money off the fear. One of the first to spot a ghost in Flagstaff was John Wayne who stayed in the town when he starred in some of his Hollywood blockbusters glorifying the gun slinging past. Max then talks to author and former convict, Chas Allen, who committed a heist after being inspired by the American anti-heroes immortalized on the silver screen. After being sentenced to and serving nine years in prison, his own story was made into a Hollywood film. He remarks on life behind bars and the reality of the American prison system where slave labor is still allowed and the assembly line of criminals is needed to deliver profits to the shareholders in the incarceration business. GONZO then hits the road again on the way to New Mexico.

GONZO: Armageddon tourism on the cable news (E4)

GONZO heads to Las Vegas, where Max and Stacy rent a 1965 Cadillac DeVille – a car from the era when ‘America was great’. They take a drive around the Vegas Strip and meet up with an artist, Alex Schaefer, at Atomic Liquors where tourists to Sin City in the 1950s used to sip cocktails whilst watching nuclear mushroom clouds on the horizon for their amusement. While painting a portrait of Max and Stacy, Alex Schaefer ponders life in our future robot zoo and contemplates America, where he says loud noises, big explosions, and dangerous life practices are as American as Donald Trump. They reminisce about the similar Armageddon tourism around the physics of separating money and trade from gold and the explosion of debt that followed. GONZO then hits the road again on the way to Yosemite National Park.

GONZO: Are we civil? (E3)

GONZO heads further up the California coastline into San Francisco where they chat to liberation psychologist and journalist Nozomi Hayase about the American dream as a great myth. In fact, the American people have never been free and forget their own barbaric history. Nozomi points out that the free speech movement started in San Francisco and the cypherpunks were at the vanguard of that movement. Now, most are so enthralled by their smartphones, and don’t actually communicate with each other using real-world dialogue, that they fail to notice the battle for freedom all around them. Before Max and Stacy head out towards Yosemite, Max stops to chat to best-selling author, Warren Farrell, about the so-called ‘boy crisis,’ what next in the gender wars and what is needed from both sides for a real truce to be called. GONZO then hits the road again, on the way to Yosemite National Park.

GONZO: Deplatforming the Mensheviks (E2)

GONZO heads up the California coastline towards Silicon Valley, witnessing much of the economic activity along the way that makes up the fifth largest economy in the world. When it is 5 o’clock, Max and Stacy stop in for a rest at a winery in Paso Robles to ask about the issues around agriculture and whether or not Trump’s trade war has impacted business. Before crossing into San Francisco, they stop in at Monterey to talk to economist Constantin Gurdgiev, who explains that modern America is eerily similar to the Soviet Union where dissent is suppressed, opinions are de-platformed and not all voices are allowed to be heard. The disconnect between reality and rhetoric gets wider and wider as a result of refusing to hear alternative ideas. GONZO then heads to San Francisco for the next leg of their journey.
