New alert as hundreds feared dead in Brazil dam disaster

An alarm warning of an imminent mining dam rupture went up early Sunday in Brumadinho, the same Brazilian community where a dam collapsed killing 37 with hundreds more feared dead, firefighters and the mining company said. The alert, warning of dangerously high water levels at a dam that is part of the Corrego do Feijao mining complex in southeastern Brazil, went off at 5:30 am (0730 GMT), a statement by the mining company Vale said. A dam at the same mining site burst Friday, spewing millions of tons of treacherous sludge and engulfing buildings, vehicles and roads.

222 dead as volcano-triggered tsunami hits Indonesia

A volcano-triggered tsunami has left at least 222 people dead and hundreds more injured after slamming without warning into beaches around Indonesia’s Sunda Strait. Hundreds of buildings were destroyed by the wave, which hit the coast of southern Sumatra and the western tip of Java about 9:30 pm (1430 GMT) on Saturday after a volcano known as the “child” of Krakatoa erupted.

Delays at Gatwick as drone sightings ground planes

People are queuing for information inside Gatwick airport as many flights have been cancelled due to drones flying over the airfield. Two drones were first spotted flying over the airport at around 9:00pm (2100 GMT). The airfield briefly reopened at 3:00am on Thursday, but had to be closed again following further sightings, the latest at 7:00am (0700 GMT).
