RAW: Toulouse police fires tear gas at Yellow Vest protesters

Sporadic clashes with police marred Yellow Vests protests in Toulouse, the city chosen as the ‘capital’ of this week’s anti-government marches in France. Act 22 is the first since a controversial anti-rioting law took effect.

This Saturday marked the 22nd consecutive week of the ‘Gilets Jaunes’ movement as France once again saw anti-government protests, which were held in cities such as Lyon, Bordeaux, Marseilles, and Strasbourg. In the French capital of Paris alone, some 5,000 demonstrators took to the streets, according to the French Interior Ministry.

Keiser Report: The ‘unstoppable’ Gilets Jaunes (E1337)

Max and Stacy look at an interview with geographer, Christophe Guilluy, who first wrote of ‘France périphérique’ in 2014. Now in 2019, as this peripheral France rises up in the Gilets Jaunes movement, we see this sharp economic and cultural divide play out not only in the streets of France but in the pages of celebrity magazines and the cable news channels of the metropolitan elite. He suggests that the silence of the celebrity and hipster class shows they are afraid of and cannot know the deplorables and the indignados of the class of people left behind by globalization and money printing. While hipsters and the metropolitan elite are absolutely certain of their progressive credentials, the fact is ‘they are very much complicit in relegating the working classes to the sidelines.’ Is ‘soft totalitarianism’ going to keep this cultural divide safely at bay? Or will the gap be filled when the Gilets Jaunes, the deplorables, and the indignados get a seat at the Davos 2020 table?

How The Yellow Vest Protests Forced Macron To Back Down (HBO)

After a fourth weekend of violent protest, French president Emmanuel Macron has desperately tried to appease those who say his policies are making them poorer.

In a televised address designed to take the heat out of the largest mass protest to hit France since the student uprising of 1968, Macron said the minimum wage would be raised and taxes on pensioners cut.

The Gilets Jaunes movement, named after the yellow high visibility vests worn by its members, staged demonstrations in most major cities in France over the weekend. More than 1,700 people were arrested. One of the demonstrations took place in the industrial city of Le Mans, southwest of Paris. At its peak, the Le Mans protest involved 300 people.
