Explosions rocked the Al-Shojaeya neighborhood east of Gaza City, Sunday, with heavy smoke seen rising above the streets, as a four-story building was reportedly hit and destroyed by an Israeli airstrike.

Israeli forces have been conducting raids on alleged Hamas targets in Gaza, claiming it to be a response to hundreds of rockets fired on Israel from the enclave.

At least eight Palestinians and three Israelis have reportedly been killed in the attacks conducted by both sides during the weekend.

Gaza skaters battle blockade and conservatism

Gaza City is a noisy place: street vendors holler and drivers blare their horns incessantly, but at the city’s port an unfamiliar sound can be heard — the rumble, grind and clatter of skateboards. The ramps and ledges a few hundred metres from the sea may not look like much, but they make up the first and only full skate park in the Palestinian enclave.

RAW: IDF strikes Hamas in response to Gaza rocket fire

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) launched airstrikes on targets in Gaza City, causing significant damage to a number of buildings, Saturday. According to the IDF, Israel was retaliating to an attack from Gaza Strip militants, who reportedly fired some 200 rockets and mortars into southern Israel from the enclave. UNWRA goes on strike in the Gaza Strip

Facilities of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) close their gates this morning during a strike by all UNRWA institutions in Gaza City against job cuts. The UN agency for Palestinian refugees has been a lifeline for millions of Palestinians since it was set up nearly 70 years ago. On August 31, the United States, by far the biggest contributor to the agency, announced it was halting its funding to the organisation, which it labelled “irredeemably flawed”.

Artists show their work among the rubble of Gaza’s craft village

Gaza artists display their work amid the rubble of the ‘Village of arts and crafts’ which was damaged by Israeli airstrikes on Gaza City on June 14. Two Palestinians were killed during the airstrikes, while some 200 rockets and mortar shells were fired from the enclave at Israel.

Why Palestinians Are Willing To Risk Their Lives During Protests On The Gaza Border (HBO)

Hamas called for thousands to amass along the border with Israel to denounce the U.S. embassy’s move to Jerusalem — and demand an end to the blockade on Gaza.

Tens of thousands of Gazans answered that call today — and the Israelis responded with overwhelming force. But the more than 50 deaths today could be a reality check, and the body count in the morgue at Gaza City’s main hospital was higher than it’s been since the last war with Israel.

For many here, a decade-long Israeli blockade has made life so hellish, that they’re readily willing to risk their lives and the large turnout for these protests is a victory in itself.

Israel and the Trump Administration have already cut the militant group out of talks on a peace plan — a deal that will reportedly offer up four Jerusalem neighborhoods to the Palestinian Authority. But that means there’s nothing to lose if the violence escalates.

Perspectives of Life in East Jerusalem (Excerpt from ‘A City Divided’)

Throughout the past several months, Jerusalem has been a scene of clashes and violent attacks. Silwan, a Palestinian neighborhood just steps away from Jerusalem’s Old City, has been at the heart of the unrest, and is becoming one of the most contentious neighborhoods in the most contested city in the world.

As settlement expansion into East Jerusalem continues, Israeli authorities have ramped up their practice of demolishing homes built without proper permits — permits which are near impossible for Palestinians to acquire. In addition to the demolitions due to lack of permits, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced in early November the reinstatement of the policy of demolishing terrorists’ homes, which Palestinians claim is a form of collective punishment.

In this excerpt, VICE News correspondent Alice Speri meets with a Palestinian and an Israeli living In the same contested neighborhood of Silwan in East Jerusalem.

Hamas Defiant: Rockets and Revenge (Dispatch 11)

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News

As the 72-hour humanitarian ceasefire entered it’s second and third days last week, the people of Gaza used the lull in fighting to take stock of the destruction, flee the fighting, and demonstrate their defiance.

VICE News correspondent Henry Langston traveled to the Rafah border gate with Egypt, where hundreds of Gazans and Egyptians alike attempted to flee. With only two bus loads making the trip each day, however, many left disappointed and were forced to return the following day.

Meanwhile, in the towns of Shejaiya and Khuza’a, residents returned to neighborhoods completely devastated by the fighting.

As the ceasefire entered it’s last 24 hours, Hamas organized a demonstration in the center of Gaza City. Thousands converged from different mosques across the city, waving Hamas flags as kids with toy guns and grenades rode on their dad’s shoulders.

The spokesman for Hamas’ military wing, Abu Ubaida, made clear in a speech that evening that if Israel refused to re-open Gaza’s port, then rockets would once again threaten the people of Israel.

Inside Gaza’s Rubble: Rockets and Revenge (Dispatch 8)

Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News

On Sunday, the Israeli military carried out the single deadliest offensive in its nearly three-week assault on Gaza, killing as many as 100 Palestinians in the neighborhood of Shejaiya. The operation — which many have called a massacre — has forced most of the remaining residents of Shejaiya to flee their homes and seek refuge in hospitals or UN schools because there is nowhere else for them to escape in the blockaded Gaza Strip.

VICE News was in Gaza to see the aftermath of the bombing of Shejaiya. We visited the central morgue in Gaza City, which holds the bodies of many who were killed. We then went to see the immediate aftermath of the shelling of yet another house in the city, and later saw another shelling site where residents were still trying to uncover family members in the rubble.

Just one day after four children were killed in an Israeli strike on a Gaza beach, at least three more children, also all from the same family, have been killed in an airstrike in Gaza City, near the Sabra neighborhood of Gaza City.

This latest bombing comes minutes after the collapse of a brief ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and hours before Israel launched a ground invasion of the Gaza Strip. Almost 50 children have been killed so far since Israel’s military operation began July 7.
