Inside the Front Lines Of The Ukrainian Cease-fire That Wasn’t (HBO)

Despite two official ceasefires, the conflict between Russia-backed separatists and the Ukrainian Army in eastern Ukraine continues to drag on toward its third year.

Heavy fighting recently broke out in the separatist-controlled territory known as the Promzone. Steady shelling and gunfire has become a daily occurrence there, despite orders for both sides to respect truce agreements. VICE News went to the front lines with the Ukrainian Army to see what the war looks like firsthand and witness the cease-fire that wasn’t.

Trying to Flee Debaltseve: Russian Roulette (Dispatch 90)

After two weeks of shelling, the situation in the Ukrainian-controlled town of Debaltseve has become extremely dire. For 10 days, the civilians in the town have been without water, gas, or electricity in freezing temperatures. The hardship — coupled with the constant shelling — has forced thousands of residents to flee.

On Saturday, the forces of the breakaway Donetsk People’s Republic took control of the town of Vuhlehirsk, around 10 kilometers east of Debaltseve, giving the separatists a chance to block the only road leading north to Artemivsk, the nearest point of safety.

In this dispatch, VICE News travels to Debaltseve to meet civilians hoping to evacuate the war-ravaged town and others who have been forced to stay. We also visit a hospital in Artemivsk to see how the staff is coping with the influx of wounded civilians and soldiers.

On the Front Lines with the Ukrainian Army: Russian Roulette (Dispatch 89)

Since mid-January, fighting between the Ukrainian military and Russian-backed rebels in Eastern Ukraine has escalated. Dozens of civilians have died due to the heavy shelling.

The rebels of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DNR) have been attacking Ukrainian Army positions in an effort to reach the city of Sloviansk. In this dispatch, VICE News travels to the Ukrainian Army’s front lines in the village of Kodema to see how soldiers there, clad in German and British gear that has been donated to them, are preparing for the much talked-about DNR offensive.

We also visit the Ukrainian-controlled mining town of Dzerzhynsk to see firsthand what effects the fighting between the two sides has had on the local population.

The Fight Against Ebola: On the Front Lines in Liberia (Trailer)

Watch Part 1 now: http://bit.ly/Ebola-Part-1

As the Ebola outbreak continues to spread in West Africa, Liberia has been hit harder than any other country in the region. With over 3400 people believed to be infected and over 1800 deaths nationwide, Liberia’s government, healthcare workers, and international aid organizations are desperately trying to contain the deadly virus.

Though the capital city of Monrovia continues to function, Liberia’s worn-down and ineffective infrastructure is proving to be insufficient in stopping the spread of the disease. Those trying to stop it are taking desperate measures as the international community dithers with lackluster efforts to help. VICE News went to Liberia to spend time with those on the front lines of the fight against the disease.
