Statue of French colonial general Gallieni vandalised in Paris | AFP

A statue of French general Joseph Gallieni is spray-painted with the words “Responsible State” and “In a Museum” as protesters in several countries continue to question the existence of colonial symbols in public spaces. General Gallieni, a colonial administrator, played a central role in the expansion of the French Empire with particularly brutal methods. He is notably at the origin of the Menalamba massacre in Madagascar, which resulted in maintaining slavery on the island. IMAGES
