Sound In Noise – ’13’

Sound In Noise
Shapes Pt.2
RAMM370

The success of Sound in Noise’s ‘Shapes EP’ on Ram Records saw the Estonian producer once again establish himself as a defining part of the roster’s new wave of artists, those who are bringing in a new era. With support from imperative industry figures such as BBC Radio 1 and US blogging behemoth Your EDM, the follow up has been hotly anticipated after the critical acclaim of its first edition. This November part two is dropping and with it comes four brand new tracks from the producer, the type of which redefine the Sound in Noise style and expose an even wider sonic language.
From the growling patches of static bass peddled throughout ’13’, through to the VIP treatment given to ‘Duppy Bass’, Sound In Noise comes with a host of fresh offerings on the Ram Records moniker. Sitting in between these cuts, ‘Space Cadet’ featuring Jon Hazel gives the EP more dancefloor-centred hooks whilst ‘Magicman’ with its guttural bassline and chiselled drum patches adds another darker undertow. They round off a project which alludes to why Sound in Noise has developed into a fan favourite within the Ram Records roster – following his exclusive signing and succession of high calibre releases on the imprint.

No polling-station lines for Estonian i-voters

Estonia was crippled by cyberattacks on government networks during a dispute with Russia in 2007. Today the tiny tech-savvy nation is so certain of its cyber defenses that it is the only country in the world to allow internet voting for the entire electorate, in every election, and thousands have already done so ahead of elections to the European Parliament.

Estonian share their expectations, as general election underway

Estonians share their expectations for their country’s general election in which a far-right party surging by a backlash from mostly rural voters is projected to make big gains, whilst Estonia’s centre-left coalition is fighting for survival. The lacklustre campaign has focused on bread and butter issues like taxation and public spending, as well as tensions over Russian language education for Estonia’s sizeable Russian minority and the rural-urban divide.

Sound In Noise ‘Ping Pong’ Official Video (Bassrush Premiere)

Sound in Noise pushed through relative obscurity to drop cut after cut of unadulterated drum & bass onto Ram Records’ vast audiences. And the last year has remained as one of his most defining, with a succession of singles creating a stage of the Estonian artist. However it’s been years in the making, with Sound in Noise already perfecting both his Djing skills and production whilst hosting his own influential club night inside his home town.

The low bass rumbles of his forthcoming single ‘Ping Pong’ rupture the track’s mix, creating a dynamic follow up to his last streamlined output on Ram’s imprint. ‘Ping Pong’ is unforgiving and slices through subs like butter, taking you down to a depth that you didn’t even know was possible, whilst manifesting a chaotic wave of beats which reign down on the listener unopposed. With clicking samples nodding to its namesake, a science fiction like vocal snippet and a looming incline that takes you into its gnarling breakdown, Sound in Noise proves he’s two steps ahead of his competition. It’s only the second part of a discography under this pseudonym but it’s already an intimidating show of force.

‘Ping Pong’ is a contemporary record with old school flavours, diving forward with the type of antiquated patterns which helped grow the genre’s foundations whilst honing in on the current trends of club goers. You’re about to become accustomed to the world of Sound in Noise, one swiftly becoming a microcosm within Ram Record’s roster and adding to the next generation on artists. Twenty five years on from the label’s creation.

After gracing the Ram Records back catalogue with his addition to ‘Ram Records Goes to Let it Roll EP 2.0’, Sound in Noise is moving through the ranks alongside his first standalone single on Ram’s definitive platform.

Twenty five years in the making, Ram’s reputation has pushed itself into dance music’s forefront, with it becoming one of the most exceptional imprints to push the drum & bass sound worldwide. And their roster has developed beside the genre, with exclusive signings and special guests helping to diversify the set of releases Ram unleashes onto its huge fan base. And Sound in Noise adds his twist to an already impressive back catalogue of cuts with his forthcoming single; his unforgiving, sonically charged records bring Ram into the contemporary era, providing a jagged edge to a history which has spanned over quarter of a century.

A-side ‘Duppy Bass’ begins with creeping atmospherics, and rolling breaks which make themselves gradually known. A smashing, jungle-esque drop and pumping drum patterns pull you deep into a reverberating, metallic bassline which pulses and stands out prominently against the mix. The added snipped up, distorted ragga samples only add to the dancefloor appeal against its throbbing stabs. The Estonian producer nods to the old-school whilst adding a new flavour with his incredibly powerful engineering, presenting himself as a hard-driving yet multi-faceted artist.

On the reverse, Sound in Noise presents the other side of his musicality with ‘Rising Up’. Featuring female vocal talents and electronically tuned notes, it’s vastly different from its forerunner but still hits just as hard with every stab of euphoric synth. Each layer of melody carries the track forward, providing you with the perfect soundtrack for a slowly diminishing summer. Together, Ram Records and Sound in Noise yet again push forward their commitment to drum & basses many dimensions, with both sides continuing to prove their longevity.

Kryptomedic – Another Day (Insect Remix)

This time last year I uploaded an unsigned track from Insect – fast forward a year, the Estonian based producer has now had a couple of singles under his belt and is slowly cementing himself as one of the best newcomers around! Insect started to look into music at age of 16. Gaining production knowledge from purely web based resources with no special musical education, he’s definitely one look out for in 2016.

He sent me this remix and I had no choice but to upload – huge vibes!

Russian Aggression and NATO Warplanes (Excerpt from ‘Estonia’s National Militia’)

Since Russia’s involvement in the Ukraine conflict in 2014, nearby Baltic states have been on high alert.Estonia, the smallest country in the region, signed a military equipment deal worth 138 million euros ($147 million) last December — the largest procurement in its history.

The country also has a growing militia, known as the Estonian Defense League, made up of 15,000 volunteers. They take part in war scenario exercises, with many of the members keeping firearms of their own at home. Should Estonia’s sovereignty be threatened, the militia will be called upon to defend it at all costs.

The organization’s membership has risen by 10 percent since Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, partly based on national Estonian fears that Russia will attempt to breach its eastern border. NATO has increased its fighter jets and ground troops in the country, as a show of what they say is support to its ally, yet Russia has claimed this is “provocative” and held its own military exercises near the border.

In this excerpt from ‘The Russians Are Coming: Estonia’s National Militia,’ VICE News talks to the head of the Estonian Air Force about NATO warplanes and the country’s tense relationship with Russia.
