Cremona is the world capital of violin-making and other string instruments. But COVID-19 has blocked exports and competition from Chinese industry risks crushing Cremonese craftsmanship. Bénédicte Friedmann, a French luthier living in Cremona, defends the art explaining that “the artisan violins made in Cremona have the luthier’s personality within them”.

Novel coronavirus in Italy: screening tent in front of Cremona hospital | AFP

Italy’s Cremona Hospital has set up a first aid ‘pre-hospital’ screening tent outside the main building since 22 February 2020 to manage the arrival of people suffering from coronavirus symptoms. Primary examinations are carried out in the tent to assess the severity of a patient’s symptoms and to direct people to the most appropriate service to be treated.
