Guinean President Alpha Conde casts vote as he bids for third term | AFP

In Guinea, incumbent President Alpha Conde votes in a polling station in the capital Conakry. Twelve candidates are in the running to lead this country of some 12 million inhabitants, among the poorest in the world rival its immense natural resources. The 82-year-old Conde’s mian opponent is long-time opponent Cellou Dalein Diallo, 68, who was formerly a prime minister under authoritarian leader Lansana Conte. Some 5.4 million registered voters are due to cast their ballots, and initial results are expected to be announced several days afterwards. A second round is scheduled for November 24.

Doctors Without Borders is working to combat the deadly Ebola outbreak that has raged in Guinea over the past two months. There are about 60 international Doctors Without Borders staff members in Conakry, Gueckedou and Macenta that are working alongside additional Guinean medical workers. According to Guinea’s Ministry of Health, there have been at least 134 suspected cases and 84 deaths, with additional cases reported in neighboring Sierra Leone and Liberia.
