Ted Cruz Thinks He’s Going To Beat Beto O’Rourke. The Voters Agree. (HBO)

Columbus, Texas — Senator Ted Cruz is not assuming anything in his campaign for re-election. He’s a popular politician in a state that hasn’t sent a Democrat to the senate in 25 years. But polls show him in a surprisingly tight race with the young, telegenic upstart Beto O’Rourke, who’s captivated liberal crowds in Texas, and celebrity endorsements across the nation.

That’s why Cruz was here on Saturday, at an intimate gathering in a deep red town halfway between Houston and San Antonio: to rally the faithful back to his cause.

“The danger is that the economy is booming, people are focused on their jobs and their kids, going to church, going to the ballgame, and they just don’t make it out to vote,” Cruz told the crowd. “Our danger is complacency.”

Cruz leads O’Rourke by 4 percentage points, according to the Real Clear Politics average. But he faces more than just the familiar incumbents’ paradox that when things are good, parties in power have a hard time mobilizing voters.

The bigger worry is voter overconfidence. According to internal Republican National Committee data reported by Axios, the Republican faithful are unusually immune to reports showing that Democratic candidates are on the rise. One recent RNC survey found that 57% of strong Trump supporters don’t believe that Democrats will retake the House.

“To me, the polls that we’re seeing right now are eerily similar to the Trump-Clinton polls that we saw going up to the election,” said Tom Kelley, the GOP chair for Colorado County, at Cruz’s stop in Columbus. “It’s all hype and hyperbole.”

That’s why Cruz can’t simply ignore the huge crowds being drawn out by his opponent.

“We’re going to win this race,” Cruz told VICE News. “I feel very good about where we are. But the reason we’re going to win it is we’re not taking anything for granted. It is clear there are a lot of folks on the far left who are really angry and that anger — it’s a motivator. It is bringing dollars, it’s bringing passion, it’s bringing energy. And we have to take it seriously.”

This Guy Is Trying To Hunt Down One Of The Most Notorious Neo-Nazis (HBO)

Jeff Cremeans is a process server — also known as the guy who hands defendants a thick stack of court documents and says, “you’ve been served.” In his 25 years in the business, he’s been screamed at, threatened, had a chair thrown at him — he’s even driven a boat to an elusive defendant’s lakehouse to serve him. But he’s never seen someone work as hard as Andrew Anglin, the world’s most notorious neo-Nazi troll, to duck being served.

Cremeans has been searching for Anglin in his hometown of Columbus, Ohio, since April 2017. He’s been spotted by locals, but never served.

Anglin is being sued for launching a “troll storm” at a Jewish woman in Montana named Tanya Gersh. Gersh was involved in a dispute with white nationalist Richard Spencer’s mother, and Anglin encouraged his readers at the Daily Stormer to contact Gersh.

Gersh told VICE News what happened next: hundreds of harassing messages, some targeting her 12-year-old son. Anglin’s lawyer, Marc Randazza, argued to VICE News that Anglin was simply exercising his First Amendment right to free speech. But rather than make that argument in court, for now, Anglin’s in hiding, avoiding being served.

So when Cremeans got a tip that Randazza — who’s based in Las Vegas — had flown into Columbus, he followed him, hoping Randazza would draw out his client.

This Movie Might Be “The Answer” to #StarringJohnCho

Movies made by minorities often don’t get traction unless they’re explicitly about minorities. But the mesmerizing new film “Columbus,” released last week, breaks through that wall.

The movie stars John Cho, making it the first film since the viral #StarringJohnCho meme of last year in which John Cho is playing the lead. It’s also the debut project by Kogonada, an Asian American film essayist turned filmmaker.

VICE News visited Columbus, Indiana, the film’s location, and talked with Kogonada and Cho about the barriers they face in making art that is ‘universal’.
