An Iranian oil tanker called ‘Fortune’ has made it to Venezuela to deliver 43 million liters of gasoline.
The ‘Fortune’ had a tense crossing through the Caribbean, after officials in Washington signaled that they were ‘looking at measures’ that could be taken in response to the shipment. Iran’s President Rouhani had warned that the country would retaliate if the US tried to prevent the tanker’s arrival.
The Iranian vessel is the first of five oil tankers, along with the ‘Clavel’, the ‘Forest’, the ‘Faxon’, and the ‘Petunia’, that are set to arrive in the port of El Palito west of Venezuela’s capital, Caracas, over the next few days.
They are carrying over 1.5 million barrels of fuel to Venezuela, which despite being oil-rich, has faced an energy crisis due to crippling US sanctions.
Venezuelan officials thanked Iran for ‘transporting fuel for the People of Venezuela, affected by the economic blockade imposed by the United States government.’
