Here’s Why West-Bound Fights Always Take Significantly Longer

Ever wonder why your flight back from vacation feels so much longer than the one you took to get there? Part of it could be a vacation version of the “Sunday scaries,” but it’s also possible that your return flight is actually spending more time in the air.

“There’s a very concentrated region of high headwinds called the jet stream,” Massachusetts Institute of Technology Aeronautics and Astronautics professor R. John Hansman told Business Insider.

Flight routes are planned around the jet streams to either take advantage of the help from the tailwinds or avoid flying into them because of the strong headwinds.

These firefighting mules go where trucks and helicopters cannot

Pack mules still have a role in the digital age. The US Forest Service uses them to supply wildland fire crews in the remote areas of northern California. While environmental laws forbid the use of helicopters, planes and trucks in designated wilderness areas, the performance of these beasts of burden in such extreme conditions of the country stand on there own. Modern-day horseman attest to their stamina, temperament and charisma as man and mule alike continue a tradition that began nearly two centuries ago.

Inside the exclusive multimillion-dollar San Francisco street that a couple bought for $90,000

Tina Lam and Michael Cheng are living their version of the American dream.

The couple made headlines this week when a San Francisco Chronicle story outed their 2015 purchase of Presidio Terrace — a private cul-de-sac lined by $35 million mega-mansions.

An unpaid tax bill caused the City of San Francisco to put it up for sale, without the knowledge of the street’s wealthy residents. Lam, an engineer in Silicon Valley, and Cheng, a real-estate agent, scooped up the street, its sidewalks, and other “common ground” for $90,000.

Now residents are up in arms, in part because the couple wants to charge them rent for using the street’s 120 parking spaces. The homeowners association has sued the couple and the city.

We used Google Earth to get a look at the exclusive private development.

A podiatrist explains the condition Trump said earned him a medical deferment from Vietnam

On Monday, President Donald Trump tweeted out a series of attacks on Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal’s record during the Vietnam War. Trump himself had five deferments from service in Vietnam, four were for education, and the fifth was a medical deferment, for a foot condition he described as heel spurs.
We asked podiatric surgeon Dr. Jacqueline Sutera (who has not treated Mr. Trump) to explain the diagnosis.

Selfridges opened its Christmas shop 5 months early

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at London department store Selfridges.

Visitors to the Oxford Street shopping staple may be surprised to see Christmas trees and bright, shiny baubles on display – in August.

Selfridges buying manager Geraldine James says the store’s early start to the holiday season is driven by demand from shoppers visiting from outside the British capital.

“I guess it’s the summertime, but – it’s the summertime – but this time of the year we have a lot of visitors who come from all over the world,” she says.

“We have about 20,000 a week who visit our tax-free lounge. And they kind of demand it from us. And we probably won’t see them again this year, so it’s their one and only chance to buy something. And, you know, Christmas is such a time for families. And people buy a Christmas decoration or a bauble to take home, to hang on the tree, and then they look at it at Christmas time and say; ‘Oh, that reminds me of my trip to London.'”

Selfridges flagship store on London’s Oxford Street opened in 1909.

CCTV footage shows the shocking moment a jogger appears to push a woman in front of a London bus

Police are looking for a jogger who appeared to push a woman in front of a London bus during a bizarre unprovoked attack.

The London Metropolitan Police on Tuesday released CCTV footage of the dramatic incident, which took place on May 5 around 7.40 a.m.

The 33-year-old victim was walking across Put ney Bridge toward the underground station at the time.

As can be seen in the video, the jogger — in a light grey T-shirt and dark blue shorts — pushed the victim off the pavement as they crossed each other’s paths.

Luckily for the victim, an oncoming bus managed to swerve out the way to avoid a crash. The victim received minor injuries, and Putney police praised the “superb quick reactions of the bus driver.”

Fifteen minutes after the incident, the jogger encountered the victim again when he returned to the bridge on his run. The victim tried to speak to him, but he did not acknowledge her and continued jogging, police said.

Police described the jogger as a white man in his early- to mid-30s, with brown eyes, and short brown hair. They have appealed for the jogger to come forward to speak to them

Three runners leave the Tube and race it to the next station – and it’s an incredibly close contest

Watch these three runners race a London Underground train to the next station.

The competitors began their race from Mansion House station and hoped to catch the same train at Cannon Street station which is 0.2 miles away.

They can be seen sprinting up stairs, through ticket barriers and avoiding pedestrians to reach their destination.

The train journey itself takes around 2 minutes from each station, so it’s sure to be an incredibly tense and close contest.
