AP Top 25 Podcast: Bowl Season Preview

The bowl matchups are set. A marathon football feast that lasts from December to early January includes 40 games of varying quality needs an extra-long podcast to preview it all. Matt Brown, college football editor at The Athletic — and an AP poll voter — joins Ralph Russo on the AP Top 25 College Football Podcast’s bowl preview show. Brown and Russo hit on every game but the playoffs. (There will be plenty of time for that later.) This week, they give you a nugget on all those other games, starting in the Bahamas with Buffalo and Charlotte. There is a matchup of triple-option versus air raid. There are some struggling ACC teams that got sent to the bowl equivalent of the penalty box. Alabama is playing Michigan _ and all anybody is talking about is who may or may not play.

This Immigrant Left the U.S. To Seek Asylum In Canada And Regrets It (HBO)

Jose Castillo is an undocumented immigrant, who after 15 years in the U.S. uprooted his family, hid them in the basement of a church in Buffalo, and snuck them across the border to Canada to seek asylum.

Watch: Anywhere but here: An undocumented immigrant’s journey to Canada

It was supposed to be the end of his struggle — like tens of thousands of immigrants who have fled to Canada, Jose believed it would welcome him with open arms. But now, just 10 months later, he’s worried he might have made a huge mistake.

VICE News traveled to Canada, where Jose and more than 20,000 people are learning that the country isn’t quite as welcoming as they thought, and government officials are being dispatched to the United States to clear up the misunderstanding before another 20,000 show up.

Inside The First Court Designed To Keep Opioid Addicts Alive (HBO)

Buffalo is responding to New York’s opioid epidemic by opening the nation’s first opioid intervention court that treats participants more like patients than defendants.

Unlike standard drug courts, Buffalo’s opiate intervention court gets eligible defendants into court-supervised addiction treatment programs almost immediately and places any drug-related charges on hold for a minimum of 30 days. Successful completion of the program can lead to charges that are reduced or even dropped.

The court is overseen by Craig D. Hannah, a judge whose philosophy is informed by his own struggles with drug addiction and a rejection of the mass incarceration culture encouraged by the drug epidemics of the 70s and 80s. Hannah’s priority is keeping his participants alive. “Our goal is to make sure they’re here the next day, tomorrow, next week, next year,” he told VICE News.

The Canadian Dream: VICE News Tonight on HBO (Full Segment)

The crackdown on immigration in the United States under the Trump administration has turned Buffalo, New York into a hiding spot for undocumented immigrants hoping to escape the Department of Homeland Security and eventually make their way to Canada, where they can claim refugee status.

VICE News Tonight correspondent Roberto Ferdman followed José, who recently decided he had no other alternative, as he fled the United States to make his journey to Canada and restart his life. He sought sanctuary in a church in Buffalo for weeks, where his family joined him so they could sneak their way up to the border.
