DC Breaks – ‘Concrete Junglist’

Various Artists
RAM Rave EP Pt.1
RAMM368

The forthcoming ‘Ram Rave’ EP is a celebration of the sounds which they’ve spearheaded for over twenty-five years, becoming one of the leading imprints and trend setters within their field. The EP’s first edition, which welcomes mainstay Ram roster artists as well as newcomer producers, will transport its audience to the dancefloors Ram has dominated throughout its evolving history.

Whether that’s at the seminal 02 Academy in Brixton, or to crowds of thousands at Let it Roll Festival and SW4 in London, Ram’s influence over the global clubbing circuit has been undeniable. And the ‘Ram Rave’ EP is demonstrative of that fact, with a host of sub genres catered to, exploring how Ram has cultivated the sounds which make it such a driving force within today’s dance music scene.
DC Breaks ‘Concrete Jungle’ brings epic jungle breaks through a modern-day technique, whilst Mob Tactics pedestal the classic dancefloor vibes which Ram always provide. Dr. Meaker’s ‘Funk Flicks’ is impossible to escape with its bouncing hooks and NC17 & NUSENSE slice through with their patches of tech-laced, wobbling bass on ‘Come Test’. A new addition to the Ram army, Showdown’s ‘Pressure’ adds more melody infused, drum peddled movements, highlighting more of the EP’s diversity. As a collection, it drives straight into the heart of Ram and what has always been at the core of its ethos. That’s to provide music for speaker stacks – something they’ve delivered from the start.

Inside London’s ‘Breaking Bad’ cocktail bar

ABQ is London’s Breaking Bad themed cocktail bar.

Customers “cook” their own drinks dressed up in a hazmat suit. Ingredients come in flasks, syringes, and other props.

The bar is set up in an RV and is named ABQ after Albuquerque, New Mexico, where the series was set.

ABQ opened as a pop up in Hackney last summer. It’s now permanent and is set to expand to Brixton and Dalston. There’s also a venue in New York.

The independent currency fighting corporations in London

Economic activists in Brixton, South London have created the Brixton Pound, a “currency” designed to support the local community.

There are around 500,000 Brixton Pounds in circulation and it’s accepted in over 200 businesses across Brixton.

“If you spend £5 on a cup of coffee in a chain store, the majority of that money just flies straight out to whoever owns the shares in the coffee chain,” Brixton Pound Director Charlie Waterhouse told Business Insider.

The notes have famous people from Brixton printed on, like David Bowie.

Customers can also set up a Brixton Pound account and pay via text. Shop owners can either reinvest they Brixton Pounds or change them to Sterling.

The founders hope to widen the circulation of the “currency.” They believe it’s the best way to keep money within the community.

Sprinting at an incredible speed, June Miller are inevitably coming closer to their debut album. With seven more days until this conundrum of genre cross-pollination and production ingenuity is unleashed, here’s a small appetiser to prepare yourself for an eclipse, caused by June Miller’s vast capabilities.

‘Chain of Strength’ is a starter which hits you with wave after wave of seismic bass-driven impact, instantly recognisable as the intro to Andy C’s soldout Brixton performance. Lead unsuspectingly from a lulling piano intro, straight through a chasm of smashing, hardcore-reminiscent percussion and driving drums, it proves the duo’s endless versatility. Alongside a building break that literally pulses with anticipation, that first drop leaves you free-falling into an explosion of tightly intricate composition. A complete sensory overload, it sets a standard matched by their new material.

Then comes ‘Last Night on Earth’, creepy and gradually building tension with an instantly-recognisable sample of cinematic proportions. Both tracks are equally unstoppable, not leaving you time to breathe and carrying across an ocean of sound which is relentless. Amongst the ghost-like, clashing swords and almost untenable intensity, you’re pulled through loops of incessant hi-hats, amongst palpitation-inducing drum patterns.

A single that embodies the peak of any weekend set, here’s the marker for June Miller’s meteoric rise. After merging some of the darkest European styles, as well as smashing genre prototypes and incorporating drum & bass’ core production, the duo are switching up the game onto its next level.
