What Army Recruits Go Through At Boot Camp

We got an inside look at the United States Army’s intense 22-week basic training known as OSUT, which stands for One Station Unit Training. Senior Video Correspondent Graham Flanagan spent four days at the Army’s Maneuver Center of Excellence located inside the Fort Benning military installation near Columbus, Georgia, where he observed different companies at various stages of training.

After a processing period that takes one to two weeks, recruits experience what’s known as a “shark attack,” when drill sergeants create a high-stress environment through a series of rapid-fire instructions and commands. Once the intensity subsides and training begins, the dynamic between the drill sergeants and the recruits evolves into one found between a teacher and students in a classroom.

Despite rainy conditions that rarely let up during filming, we saw various dynamic aspects of training, such as marksmanship, tear gas exposure, and MOUT, which stands for military operations in urban terrain.

What Canadian Mounties Go Through At Boot Camp

We got an inside look at the intense 26-week training program that all future Mounties must endure before officially joining the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Senior video correspondent Graham Flanagan spent five days at the RCMP Academy, Depot Division in Regina, Saskatchewan where he observed different troops at various stages of training. The training is focused on mastering police procedure, but cadets are also put through intense physical challenges, such as entering a gas chamber and enduring a “uniform run” with a dog handler in sub-zero temperatures. Male and female cadets train together at Depot, and even square off against each other in Police Defensive Tactics training. The future Mounties also learn about RCMP customs and traditions dating back to the 19th century, culminating with the Regimental Dinner — a ceremony that, according to the RCMP, media had not been allowed to attend before this film shoot.

Boot Camp Season One Marathon

What New Secret Service Recruits Go Through At Boot Camp

We got an inside look at the United States Secret Service’s intense, six-month basic training program. Senior video correspondent Graham Flanagan spent three days inside the James J. Rowley Training Center in Laurel, Maryland, where he observed recruits at various stages of training.

According to the Secret Service, about one in every 100 applicants makes it through the agency’s intense vetting process to become a recruit. The base salary for new agents and officers is $47,000 per year.

After spending three months at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in either Artesia, New Mexico or Glynco, Georgia, recruits return to Laurel for three more months of Secret Service-specific training.

Although we were allowed to film inside the academy, much of the training remained secret. According to the training center’s deputy chief, Michael Buck, this was intended to avoid “giving people specifics into our protective methodologies … we don’t advertise our playbook.”

UPDATE: In the video, we identify a car as a Dodge Challenger, when what is seen on screen is a Dodge Charger. We regret the error.
