How The Man Who Challenged Tesla Went Bankrupt

Faraday Future, a California-based electric-car startup and Tesla’s once rival, generated buzz in 2015 as the company poached top talent from Tesla, BMW, Audi, Ford, and Ferrari. Called “Tesla killer,” Faraday’s meteoric rise in notoriety occurred on dubious underpinnings — the company did not promise a product, nor did it announce any concrete plans for its first few years of operation. The mystery surrounding Faraday was only matched by its enigmatic cofounder and CEO, Jia “YT” Yueting, the billionaire businessman who founded multiple telecom companies in China but left abruptly to become the CEO of Faraday. We took a look at YT and Faraday Future’s promise, the financial woes that led them both to bankruptcy, and YT’s relationship with the reanimated Faraday today.

BMW Just Refueled A Car Air Force Style While Drifting

BMW refueled a car while drifting. The stunt was part of an attempt to beat the longest drift in eight hours. BMW set the record in 2013 at 51.278 miles. They broke that record by 143 miles. Drifting a total of 232.5 miles.

Typically cars are outfitted with larger gas tanks to break the drifting record. The rules also allow the car to stop and refuel. But BMW thought that was boring. BMW decided to refuel the car mid-drift. They pulled inspiration from fighter jets. They call the method car-to-car refueling. A custom fueling system was built for the stunt. The refueling car pumped 18 gallons of gas in 50 seconds. The biggest obstacle was connecting the fuel hose mid-drift.

Unlike a fighter jet, they used a person to fuel the car. It took three people to complete the task. The refueler hung out of the car via a safety tether. There was a slim margin for error. They practiced the stunt multiple times before their record-breaking attempt. During the attempt, they refueled five times.

BMW broke two Guinness World Records:

1. Longest Vehicle Drift in 8 hours

2. Longest Twin Vehicle Drift.

Mini’s New Electric Car Concept Is Perfect For Urban Dwellers

This is the Mini Electric Concept and it’s a modern take on the 2009 Mini E. The Mini E’s electric powertrain and huge battery pack made it a two-seater. However, the Mini Electric seats four and it’s perfect for urban areas. It has a sleek silver and yellow paint job and what looks like Union Jack tail lights. Also, parts of the wheels were 3D printed. Mini’s early experimentation with electric cars influenced the BMW i3. The BMW i3 powertrain tech is expected to be shared with the final version, so expect a range of 150 miles and 150 hp. Production of an all-electric Mini is expected for 2019.
