Greece’s new conservative parliament convenes after elections | AFP

Greece’s new parliament is sworn in after July 7 elections that saw a broad conservative victory end over four years of leftist rule. The 51 members of the new government swore the oath of office on the Bible in a ceremony led by the Archbishop of Athens Ieronymos, in line with Greek tradition. That further underlined the break with the term of defeated leftist prime minister Alexis Tsipras, an atheist, who had taken the oath in a civil ceremony in 2015. Mitsotakis, a pro-business conservative, has vowed to ditch Tsipras’s proposals to separate Church and state. IMAGES

What A Rabbi, An Imam And A Bishop Think About Jeff Sessions’ Zero Tolerance Policy (HBO)

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is facing mounting criticism from an unexpected group: fellow members of his church.

More than 600 members of United Methodist Church issued a formal complaint against Sessions three days after he used a passage from the Bible to justify the Trump administration’s controversial “Zero Tolerance” policy against immigrants arriving at the border. Sessions has been an adamant defender of the policy, which has resulted in over 2,000 children being separated from their parents since early May.

Specifically, his fellow church members are charging him with “the misuse of Romans 13 to indicate the necessity of obedience to secular law,” among other offenses.

They’re far from the only ones criticizing Sessions’ use of religion to defend his policy on the border.

VICE News sat down with a bishop, an imam, and a rabbi to discuss Sessions’ controversial use of religious text — and how religious doctrine is often abused to further political interests.

“In each of our faith traditions and all faith traditions the goal is not to blindly follow but to search and to really explore, and think, and wrestle, and come up with answers,” said Rabbi Yael Rapport when asked about the Attorney General’s use of Romans 13. “I imagine that Sessions used that quote in order to reinforce this idea of hierarchy: that the text is teaching you must follow who’s above you.”

Crucifixion in the Philippines

In the Philippines, Good Friday is spent performing a very literal reenactment of the Bible, specifically, the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The annual ritual, which draws crowds of spectators to the streets of San Fernando — a city 50 miles north of Manila — feels like the movies, except it’s all real, from the Roman costumes, down to the real nails being hammered into real human hands.

The celebrations have been going on for years, much to the disappointment of the Catholic Church, who says the ritual is a corruption of Christ’s message.

VICE News attends the Good Friday celebrations in San Fernando to speak with people partaking in this controversial ritual.
