The Fight For a Kurdish State I VICE on HBO

The Kurds have played an instrumental role in the fight against ISIS. Although their case for independence is rarely made, the Kurds are the largest ethnic group in the world without a state of their own. They’re also one of the only peoples to suffer an attempted genocide since the Holocaust.

In Iraqi Kurdistan, Vice’s Ben Anderson met those involved in the fight from the frontline to the Kurd’s former guerrilla president to ask why the group recently voted for independence and what hopes they have for achieving a state of their own.

How MDMA Could Help Cure PTSD | VICE on HBO (Bonus)

PTSD affects millions of Americans, including 20% of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and up to 30% of first responders. Despite this, available treatment is limited, resulting in long-term suffering and, in many cases, suicide. But a new set of trials using MDMA-assisted therapy has achieved remarkable results.

VICE’s Ben Anderson, who has been covering conflict for almost two decades and was diagnosed himself over a year ago, decided to try the treatment himself.

A Living Hell in Yemen & MDMA for PTSD | VICE on HBO (Trailer)

After nearly four years of war in Yemen at least 10,000 civilians have been killed. Millions more have fled their homes and are now facing famine and disease. The situation is so dire that the UN has described it as the world’s worst humanitarian disaster. The crisis, created in large part by US allies Saudi Arabia and the UAE, using US supplied weapons and planes, has turned Yemen into a living hell. Ben Anderson returns to Yemen, gets access to the various fighting groups waging war for the Saudi/Emirati led coalition, and sees the devastating effect the chaotic fighting and indiscriminate bombing is having on civilians.

Brainhackers & Fall Of Rio (Trailer) | VICE on HBO

Advancements in neurotechnology are blurring the line between biology and technology. There is an emerging push to implant electronic devices inside the human body, hardwire them to our brains, and allow us to not only overcome disadvantages or injury, but open up entirely new avenues of human experience. VICE News’ Thomas Morton gets an inside look at what might be the next evolutionary step for humankind. Then…

“Pacification” in Rio, carried out ahead of the 2012 World Cup and 2016 Olympics, was meant to spread the affluence and security of the city’s wealthy, mostly white neighborhoods to the poor, mostly black favelas. But with those events gone, Brazil is in a financial crisis, its government consumed with a monumental corruption scandal and violence is rising again as drug trafficking gangs fight for control. VICE News’ Ben Anderson returns to Rio to see what happened.

Engineering Earth (Preview) | VICE on HBO

Greenhouse gas emissions are at unprecedented levels and still rising. As climate deniers and their allies in industry and government thwart conservationists’ efforts, some scientists are working to develop a back-up plan: use technology to “geoengineer” the Earth’s atmosphere and reduce the impacts of climate change. Shane Smith and Ben Anderson find out how this technology would work and how effective this radical, and potentially dangerous, plan could be.

American Piety & Terror In Congo (Trailer) | VICE on HBO

This week on VICE on HBO, we’re looking at Trump’s evangelical base in American and the crisis in the Congo.

White evangelicals comprise a third of all Republican voters and are among the GOP’s most organized voting blocs. But wide support for Donald Trump in 2016, against a backdrop of scandals, has brought heavy media scrutiny and now some faith leaders are striving to move evangelicalism away from political associations. Gianna Toboni travels to the Bible Belt to see how evangelicals are navigating today’s volatile political environment.

Then — Conflict in Eastern Congo has killed as many as six million people, more than any war since WWII. Yet this conflict remains among the most underreported crises in the world. Ben Anderson reports on the ADF (Allied Democratic Forces), one of the least known, but most violent groups in the world.

“After ISIS” with Ben Anderson | VICE on HBO

The fight to retake Mosul, the biggest city in ISIS’ so-called caliphate, lasted over 10 months and was the biggest urban battle to take place since World War II. As civilians of Mosul endured the impossible choice of hiding in their homes or fleeing, running the risk of being killed by ISIS, the war raged on–bombarding homes and destroying the everything in its path. With unparalleled access,

VICE followed the Iraqi Army as they fought the terrorist group, room to room, house to house and street to street, often fighting for days on end and suffering horrendous casualties on a slow crawl to liberation.

Iraqi Forces Take Back al-Nuri Mosque (HBO)

West Mosul, Iraq – As Iraqi military recaptured the al-Nuri Mosque Thursday, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi claimed victory in the long fight against ISIS. Retaking the mosque was symbolically important – ISIS used the site to declare a so-called caliphate in 2014 – and Iraqi forces have fought a grueling battle to claw back lost territory in the three years since.

VICE News’ Ben Anderson has been following the Iraqi Army’s painstaking fight against the terror group, as they trying to cut the route between two of ISIS’s last remaining positions in west Mosul: the al-Jamhuri Hospital, which gives ISIS snipers a huge military advantage, and the old city, where most of the remaining fighters are hiding among civilians as they take their brutal last stand.

Dismantling an IED in Afghanistan – VICE on HBO Special Episode (Preview)

“Taliban Resurgence” is a special 30 minute episode of VICE. Hosted by correspondent and producer Ben Anderson, the special episode debuts on HBO Friday, May 5 at 11pm.

The Taliban now control more territory than they have at any point since they were overthrown in 2001. Yet the war in Afghanistan barely gets mentioned today, even as civilian and security deaths continue to rise. VICE correspondent Ben Anderson returns to the conflict he’s covered for 10 years, reuniting with several Afghans — an Army Major, a Policeman who dismantles IEDs and a family who were forced to fight to defend their home — for a shocking report that questions what America’s longest war has actually accomplished.

VICE’s “Taliban Resurgence” debuts on HBO Friday, May 5 at 11pm.

Iraqi Troops Are Making Plans To Retake Western Mosul (HBO)

The government of Iraq announced that it liberated Eastern Mosul on Tuesday, but the battle continues. Helping the push to retake the center of Mosul from the North are highly successful Popular Mobilization Units, more commonly known as the controversial Shiite Militias. These groups, heavily backed by Iran and serving as a contrast to the CTS, offer VICE News Tonight a unique insight into the geopolitics at play in the retaking of Mosul and show the extent to which Iran is invested in Iraq. Correspondent Ben Anderson reports.

Taliban Is Stronger Than Ever 15 Years After U.S. Invasion (HBO)

This month marks the 15th anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan. The war has claimed the lives of over 31,000 Afghan civilians, and over $783 billion has been spent attempting to push the insurgents out, instill a sustainable democracy, and build civic institutions.

Fifteen years later, the Taliban contest or control more territory than at any point since the U.S. invasion.

VICE News correspondent Ben Anderson, reporting from Kabul, spoke to people who’ve fled from Helmand, a province in on the southern border of Pakistan.

Bahrain: More Bloodshed

Watch “Bahrain: An Inconvenient Uprising” – http://bit.ly/11uAes9

Earlier this year, VICE News correspondent Ben Anderson traveled to Bahrain undercover to document the ongoing protests there. Bahrainis — inspired by the Arab Spring — have been taking to the streets every night for almost four years, calling for democracy.

One of the people Ben interviewed was Yousif Badah. His son, Ali Badah, was killed while protesting three years ago, when a police SUV repeatedly ran into him, pinning him against a wall.

On the third anniversary of his son’s death, Yousif and others held a vigil for Ali. That vigil turned into a march, and was similarly met with police violence, this time resulting in injury to Yousif himself.

Bahrain: An Inconvenient Uprising (Extra Scene)

Like many countries in the Middle East and beyond, Bahrain erupted with anti-authoritarian protests in 2011 when the Arab Spring took the region and many of its repressive leaders by surprise.

While Arab Spring uprisings found favor with many in the West, unfortunately for the people of Bahrain, their own revolution was largely forgotten. But it never went away — for three years, near-nightly protests have been brutally quashed by militarized security forces.

Earlier this year, VICE News correspondent Ben Anderson travelled to London to speak with Nabeel Rajab, the unofficial leader of Bahrain’s uprising, and then headed undercover to Bahrain, where he met activists, protestors, grieving parents, and alleged torture victims.
