Students at New Zealand’s largest Islamic school held a service on Wednesday honouring the 50 people killed during last week’s mosque attacks in Christchurch.

The event at Al-Madinah School in Auckland included singing, speeches and a performance of the haka, the famed ceremonial dance of the indigenous Maori people. READ MORE: https://on.rt.com/9qch

Shapeshifter NZ – Stars (Live at Vector Arena)

A special treat in the form of Shapeshifter NZ with their performance of ‘Stars’ at Vector Arena.

Buy or stream ‘Stars’ here:
https://HospitalRecords.lnk.to/Starsyb

Shapeshifter NZ solidify their out-of-this-world status with their sixth studio album Stars, out now!

Melding a progressive bass music approach with their definitive core elements – hypnotic electronic textures, barreling backbeats and the driving vocals of P Digsss – Stars pushes their stadium-sized sound to new heights.

Recorded between their New Brighton and Auckland studios, Shapeshifter NZ spent six months writing tunes and ideas before setting down the album at Auckland’s Roundhead Studios with The Upbeats’ Dylan Jones and Jeremy Glenn.

“We ended up with around 100 songs – a mountain of music. Working through them, there were the standouts, songs we all felt really strongly about. We’re ecstatic with the final result and how it’s all come together,” said Nick Robinson (bass/synths/MPC).

That interstellar result includes a tracklisting of 11 expertly crafted tunes – tracks which travel between the summer-time anthem of lead single ‘Stars’ and the cosmic craftings of ‘Her’, to the driving dance anthem ‘Eternal’ and darker corners of ‘Ex Machina’.

It’s cohesive collection which blends their signature heavy soul and explosive drum ‘n bass sound, all the while exploring space-sized synths and electric, energetic, genre-defying avenues.

Their first album since the platinum selling Delta in 2013 – a release that also bore platinum single ‘In Colour’ – Stars marks the welcome return of one of New Zealand’s finest.

Worst stranding in decades: Over 300 pilot whales die in New Zealand

Most of the 415 whales that washed up on a narrow sand spit in Golden Bay, New Zealand died by Thursday night, while scores of volunteers armed with blankets struggled to keep the surviving animals wet to refloat them during a life-saving tide. According to Auckland University Marine Biologist Rochelle Constantine, the event was the nation’s third largest recorded stranding. The biggest was in 1918, when about 1,000 pilot whales came ashore on the Chatham Islands. In 1985 about 450 whales were stranded in Auckland. READ MORE: https://on.rt.com/82tb

World’s longest commercial flight: Qatar to New Zealand in almost 16 hours

Courtesy: TVNZ

Qatar Airways is bidding for the longest commercial flight record as its jet lands in Auckland airport, after flying from Doha for a total of 15 hours and 50 minutes.

The CEO of Qatar Airlines, Akbar Al Baker, who was on board the flight said, ‘I am here at the end of the world, and I am very pleased’, adding, ‘this is going to be the longest commercial flight that exists today.’

There is, of course, a little bit of disagreement between airlines as to which flight is longer as Air India argues that its Delhi-San Francisco flight is the longest, clocking up a distance of 9,506 miles.

This isn’t based on the “Great Circle” distance (shortest route between two points on a sphere), however, flying over the Pacific Ocean instead of the Atlantic Ocean, which adds almost 1,400 km. According to the “Great Circle” route, Doha and Auckland are further apart on the surface of the Earth.

When The Time Comes. A mellower, contemplative approach comes with this track, A warm, progressive sound developing throughout. Urgent, insistent programming is at the root of this one, with a smooth melody riding along on top. The whole package is completed by a moveable bassline, which keeps things pinned together perfectly. When The Time Comes the last ever track written by the original Cern duo, Ollie and production partner Jon Beck. The track was left unfinished to date, and has been finished by Ollie especially for this release. It acts as a homage to the memory of Jon, who sadly passed away in 2008.

The third cut, Formless showcases the EP’s progression. Another collaboration track, featuring Russia’s wonder kid Receptor. A wide-open, organic sounding intro leads into a huge, cavernous and booming techno infused main section, dominated by some eerie background noises and explosive bass notes. A series of switching, electronic effects float over the top of the kicks and the snares. Mean, nasty, and scene setting for the rest of the journey.

Become infected by the Organism, a collaboration track featuring Subtension, with its silky intro and slow, steady build. Once you are locked into the signal, the track turns around and slams its claws deep into your throat. You’ll be forced to move, forced to groove as Cern lays down a whopper of a bassline. Topped with some clinical drums and synths, this one will shake and storm any dancefloor. Truly monumental, not many other producers could get close to the power of this one.

The Nostromo EP is the perfect fit for Renegade Hardware in 2013, and Cern has found the perfect blend between classic ’97-era vibes and the bangingly up to date. The title track is a close, claustrophobic voyage into the dark, with light only coming forward when the low ends enter. Shimmering bass wraps itself around some interesting drum patterns, as Cern takes you inside his imagination. The producer builds up the levels, as the Nostromo cuts its way through both space and time. One of the best dark, neuro-influenced tracks you’ll hear all year.
