French lifeboat washed up on beach after capsizing | AFP

Three rescuers from the French ocean rescue service died when their vessel capsized in rough seas as Storm Miguel pummelled the Atlantic coast. The team from the National Society of Sea Rescue (SNSM) had been attempting to help a fishing boat which was struggling in the giant swell caused by storm Miguel, which packed winds of up to 120 kilometres an hour (75 mph).

Sailor who crossed Atlantic ocean in a barrel recounts adventure

At the age of 72, adventurer Jean-Jacques Savin has succeeded in crossing the Atlantic Ocean in a barrel, using just the tides, winds and ocean currents. He has just set foot on French soil, after 127 days and 5,800 kilometres at sea, yet he is already dreaming about setting off again in his barrel to try to cross the Pacific Ocean.
