Greta Thunberg: Sustainable living should be easier

Climate activist Greta Thunberg arrived by catamaran in the port of Lisbon after a three-week voyage across the Atlantic Ocean from the United States.
The Swedish teen sailed to the Portuguese capital before heading to neighboring Spain to attend the UN Climate Change Conference taking place in Madrid. She told supporters that it should be easier for people to live in a more sustainable way.

This 14-Year-Old Climate Activist Is Giving Up School to Save the World

Alexandria Villaseñor is standing in front of the U.S. Capitol and posting Instagram stories like any other teenager.

“Is there any good music that goes with climate action?” the 14-year-old asks a group of activists.

A couple of suggestions later, a song that’s more than twice her age blasts from her phone speakers on abbreviated loop: “It’s the end of the world as we know it… It’s the end of the world as we know it…”

And Alexandria doesn’t feel fine. Over the next few hours, she’ll have meetings with both of New York’s senators to ask them to do what they can to ensure her generation doesn’t experience the actual end of the world because of climate change.

“I notice a lot of politicians are looking at what is politically possible,” she told VICE News in an interview. “But I did think with some politicians I talk to that we’re on the same page on how urgent this is.”

Around the globe, young people like Alexandria see the climate crisis as the existential threat to their generation. They’ve skipped school in more than 130 countries to demand policy changes, following the lead of Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old from Sweden who is currently sailing across the Atlantic Ocean to attend the United Nations climate talks in September.

As one of the movement’s American organizers, Alexandria has also become a prominent young critic of world leaders’ inaction. Even though nearly 200 countries pledged in the Paris Agreement to keep global temperatures from hitting catastrophic levels, laws and norms aren’t changing quickly enough, and global greenhouse gas emissions are still going up.

When her classmates go back to middle school this fall, Alexandria won’t be joining them. Instead, she’ll take on eighth grade via independent study so that she can lead her global youth network, Earth Uprising, and continue her activism at full blast.

Richard Branson shows the hurricane damage caused to his luxury home on Necker Island

Sir Richard Branson posted a video along with pictures of the devastation to his luxury resort on Necker Island after Hurricane Irma hit.

The storm ripped apart the resort while Branson and his team hid in the wine cellar.

He said: “We felt the full force of the strongest hurricane ever in the Atlantic Ocean. But we are very fortunate to have a strong cellar built into Necker’s Great House and were very lucky all of our teams who stayed on Island during the storm are safe and well.”

Hurricane Irma devastates Antigua and Barbuda

Antigua and Barbuda were blasted by Hurricane Irma, one of the strongest ever to charge across the Atlantic Ocean, packing winds of 180 miles per hour (290 kilometers per hour). Irma damaged 95 percent of the islands’ properties and left Barbuda covered in rubble and “barely habitable,” said Prime Minister Gaston Browne.

World’s longest commercial flight: Qatar to New Zealand in almost 16 hours

Courtesy: TVNZ

Qatar Airways is bidding for the longest commercial flight record as its jet lands in Auckland airport, after flying from Doha for a total of 15 hours and 50 minutes.

The CEO of Qatar Airlines, Akbar Al Baker, who was on board the flight said, ‘I am here at the end of the world, and I am very pleased’, adding, ‘this is going to be the longest commercial flight that exists today.’

There is, of course, a little bit of disagreement between airlines as to which flight is longer as Air India argues that its Delhi-San Francisco flight is the longest, clocking up a distance of 9,506 miles.

This isn’t based on the “Great Circle” distance (shortest route between two points on a sphere), however, flying over the Pacific Ocean instead of the Atlantic Ocean, which adds almost 1,400 km. According to the “Great Circle” route, Doha and Auckland are further apart on the surface of the Earth.

Atlantic Museum: Europe’s first underwater museum opens in Spain

Some 200 life-size human figures, created over the course of two years by British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, have been submerged 14 metres (46 feet) under the Atlantic Ocean, off the Canary Island of Lanzarote, in Spain.
The sculptures, some modelled after local residents, are made from environmentally friendly and pH-neutral materials and will attract plant and animal life, just like artificial reefs.
The artworks also include a 100-tonne, 30-metre (98 feet) long wall, a botanic garden and an installation called the Raft of Lampedusa, a sculpted boat carrying 13 refugees, which pays tribute to the ordeal of refugees who crossed the ocean during the recent migrant crisis.
According to the artist, the exhibition ‘aims to create a strong visual dialogue between art and nature.’

These fishermen say Obama’s new ocean preserve will leave them high and dry

On Thursday President Obama declared the first Marine National Monument in the Atlantic Ocean. This decision followed the discovery of an array of untouched coral reefs 150 miles off the coast of New England in 2014.

While conservationists are hailing the decision as a victory, not everyone is happy with the new monument. VICE News recently traveled to New Bedford, Massachusetts – home to the most profitable fishing port in the US, and the fishermen who will be most impacted by this decision – to find out more.
