Shanghai Symphony Orchestra kicks off world tour in US | AFP

The Shanghai Symphony Orchestra holds a rehearsal ahead of its debut in Washington, performing a piece by Chinese composer Qigang Chen as well as Dvorak’s Cello Concerto and Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances. The concert on Wednesday kicked off a three-week world tour held to mark the 140th anniversary of the orchestra – Asia’s oldest – which will take them to cities such as Chicago, Amsterdam and London.

Sex workers give red light to leaving famed Amsterdam district | AFP

Bathed in red neon light, hundreds of prostitutes ply their trade from behind windows in the narrow canalside streets of Amsterdam – and that’s how they want it to stay. The Dutch capital’s first female mayor has vowed to clean up the notorious red light district and possibly even close some of the famed window booths, but sex workers say they won’t move.

Fishing for plastic on Amsterdam’s eco-friendly canal cruises | AFP

While eco-tourism is booming around the world, the Dutch company Plastic Whale is offering a new style of cruises along Amsterdam’s famous canals. Participants aim to fish as much plastic waste as possible during a two-hour boat tour. In 2018, nearly 12,000 people took part in these cruises, with participants ranging from tourists or Dutch citizens from businesses and schools.

World invited to watch museum restore Rembrandt’s ‘Night Watch’ | AFP

Amsterdam’s famed Rijksmuseum begins the biggest ever restoration of Rembrandt’s “The Night Watch”, one of the world’s most famous paintings, erecting a huge glass cage around the painting so the public can see the work carried out live for the first time. The restoration will also be streamed online.

Rare photo of young Van Gogh is actually brother: museum

A picture believed to be one of only two surviving photographs of artist Vincent Van Gogh is in fact a picture of his brother Theo, the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam says. The black and white image had long been thought to show Vincent at the age of 13, and has featured in biographies of the notoriously camera-shy artist behind “Sunflowers” and a series of self-portraits.
