Abu Dhabi just opened their Louvre museum – take a look inside

Louvre Abu Dhabi just opened 10 years after the project was announced in 2007. The art museum, designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, cost over £1 billion to make.

Abu Dhabi is renting the name “Louvre” for 30 years andy paid France £399 million to do so.

They also loaned 300 artworks from France, which cost £571 million. Just like Paris, the museum has a Da Vinci portrait, “La Belle Ferronniere,” which is also on loan.

There are more than 620 pieces and artefacts on display including Degas, Van Gogh, Monet, and Picasso. There’s also a Napoleon painting from Jacques-Louis David.

Only 235 pieces are from the museum’s own collection. Loans come from 13 French museums like Pompidou, Musee d’Orsay, and Versailles.

The Man Creating The First Supersonic Hyperloop (HBO)

Shervin Pishevar is a startup investor and one of the central social figures in Silicon Valley. He recently founded Hyperloop One, a project to move people long distances through tubes at supersonic speeds.

His reputation and fortune come largely from a single investment he made in 2011 while at the VC firm Menlo Ventures: a $26 million stake in a small ride-hailing app called Uber. Those shares are now worth more than $5 billion.

Pishevar’s friend Elon Musk came up with the idea for Hyperloop, which promises to take passengers from L.A. to San Francisco in 35 minutes with no friction and no pollution, and handed it off to Pishevar to develop.

The company is working on a plan to build a link between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, but we likely won’t see a Hyperloop in America anytime soon. Pishevar’s project has raised only $160 million, while some estimate it will cost up to $100 billion to complete a loop between L.A. and San Francisco.

Selling Weapons: It’s Good for Business (Excerpt from ‘Rearming Iraq’)

As violence escalates across the Middle East and North Africa, the United States remains the largest exporter of weapons to the region, and private US defense companies and contractors have opened local offices as the demand shows no sign of abating.

VICE News traveled to this year’s International Defense Exhibition and Conference in the United Arab Emirates capital of Abu Dhabi to examine the competition between arms manufacturers vying for a greater portion of the lucrative market.

From Abu Dhabi we traveled to Iraq, where US weapons have fallen into the hands of non-state actors such as the so-called Islamic State militant group, Kurdish Peshmerga, and militias aligned with the Iraqi government. Rather than block sales, the US government and others actively promote them — ensuring there will be enough arms to fuel the region’s wars and revolts for years to come.

In this excerpt from the International Defense Expo in Abu Dhabi, VICE News speaks with representatives from arms manufacturers as well as a general from the US military overseeing foreign military sales about their current business in the Middle East.
