Over 4,000 IS fighters, reinforced with tanks from Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor, are advancing on Palmyra, according to a statement from the Russian Centre for Reconciliation of opposing sides in Syria. The group has so far managed to gain a foothold in the city’s northern and northwestern outskirts, forcing some Syrian troops to withdraw from their positions.
