The EU is deploying additional security to its external border with Turkey, as masses of refugees make their way towards Greece. It comes after Ankara – following an intensification in fighting in Syria’s Idlib province – said it would no longer prevent displaced people from attempting to enter Europe.
Greece has reacted angrily to the Turkish move. It’s now turning away anyone attempting to enter the country illegally, and has suspended asylum applications – a decision that the UN refugee agency has said lacks any legal basis.
The crisis has left thousands of refugees stranded at Europe’s borders. Others are searching for alternative routes into the EU – including via the Mediterranean.
