German researchers have developed the first diagnostic test for a new type of #coronavirus that can spread from human to human.
According to Dr. Christian Drosten, who developed the test together with colleagues at Berlin’s Charite hospital, it’s simple and involves the quick collection of a throat or cough swab for laboratory analysis.
The outbreak of the new #virus was first detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan last year and has since reached at least four other countries and territories, including Thailand and Japan.
Six people have died and 291 have been infected in China, the Chinese National Health Commission said Tuesday.
Anxiety grew in Asia and elsewhere after a Chinese government expert on Monday confirmed that the virus can spread from human to human, and could possibly spread further during the Lunar New Year travel rush.
Drosten, who leads the Institute for Virology at Charite Hospital, said that the upcoming travel season in China could pose a serious challenge.
