Maryland’s highest court will either confirm or deny a rule change stating that judges cannot set bail at levels they know defendants cannot pay. The decision is part of a larger criminal justice reform across the country, one that would reduce reliance on the cash bail system in the US. That’s a system supporting 15,000 bond agents who write about $14 billion in bonds each year. VNT rides with Maryland’s largest bail bondsmen company, meets with a family devastated by the current system, and sits down with the state’s Attorney General, who’s led the charge for bail reform and is despised by bail bondsmen and law enforcement.
