Chilean police fire water cannons and throw tear gas canisters at crowds gathered at Santiago’s emblematic Plaza Italia — which has emerged as the epicenter of anti-government protests — on the 47th anniversary of the coup d’etat orchestrated by General Augusto Pinochet that ousted President Salvador Allende and led to a 17-year-long dictatorship.
