Archaeologists have unearthed dozens of ancient coffins buried more than 2,500 years ago near Cairo, and most of them have mummies inside them.
Rumors that the mummies wanted to return to the ground after learning about the coronavirus pandemic have not been confirmed.
The coffins belonged to priests, top officials and elites. They would have all been subject to ancient Egypt’s complex burial rituals after they died, including having their brains removed with an iron hook – the ancient equivalent of watching the presidential debates.
All the coffins discovered so far are in good condition and bear hieroglyphic inscriptions in bright colors.
‘My colleagues in the Supreme Council of Antiquities discovered burial shafts filled with wooden, sealed and intact coffins,’ Khalid El-Enany, Egypt’s antiquities minister said.
‘I am really impressed that Covid-19 did not stop them from digging to unveil more mystery and secrets about our great civilization.’
