Torrential rain across parts of north and west Africa has caused heavy flooding, killing scores and displacing hundreds of thousands of people. Meanwhile, talks continue in Mali following last month’s military coup, as the new junta discusses a transition towards civilian rule. And following one of the world’s strictest lockdowns, South Africa has announced that its economy shrank by more than half in the first two quarters of the year.
