White House Arrests GMO Petitioner
Tue, 05 Mar 2013 18:53:33 +0000
Who knew that Alexis Badden Mayer of the Organic Consumers Association would be arrested outside the White House when she attempted to deliver a DVD Petition with over 200,000 names asking Michelle Obama to ask her husband to fulfill a campaign promise to label GMO food products.
There is no more basic American right, then petitioning the government - but not if you don't have the money to buy access to officials who have become more responsive to the interest groups that finance their elections then the people who elected them. And so it was with the petition that called for the truthful labeling of foods containing genetically modified organism (GMO). People want to know what they are eating and want food labeling to indicate if the food has been genetically modified.
But in this Instant Film, the story gets sidetracked when a couple of Jewish "missionaries" coincidentally roll up at the White House and ask to see the President, then perform the Jewish Tefillin ritual which consists of strapping a small box containing Torah verses to the head and arm of Adam Eidinger, one of demonstrators. While Adam is strapped he begins whispering about how GMO foods are not Kosher and how the insecticides, genetically engineered into corn, are killing the bees. But all this does not go unnoticed by the uniformed Secret Service, who become increasingly impatient, with a demonstration, now blocking an entrance, that seems to be spiraling out of control. But instead of arresting those blocking the entrance, they arrest the person trying to deliver the petitions, Alexis Baden-Mayer from the Organic Consumers Association.

Pakistanis rally to voice anger over US drone attacks
Mon, 26 Nov 2012 04:32:29 +0000
Pakistan's biggest Islamic party, Jamat-e-Islami organised a massive rally in the country's north west to denounce what they called the US aggression in their country's tribal areas and interference in their country' internal affairs.
People in their thousands came to join the rally to voice anger over the US assassination drone strikes in the tribal areas along the border with Afghanistan, saying the attacks have been killing innocent people and are a clear violatation of their country's sovereignty.
Despite Pakistani government's repeated protests, the US government continues its assassination drone strikes on Pakistan's tribal regions and since 2008, its has carried out hundreds of its assassination drone attacks in Pakistan's northwest, killing more than 3 thousand people.
Washington claims its drone strikes target Al-Qaeda-linked pro Taliban militants. However, casualty figures show that civilians, including women and children, are the main victims of these attacks.

Topless at the Louvre: FEMEN activists stage anti-rape protest — RT
Wed, 03 Oct 2012 21:58:37 +0000
Members of the FEMEN group have bared themselves again, this time at Paris’s Louvre. A group of girls protested against rape by standing topless in front of the Venus de Milo statue.
The FEMEN activists shouted, “We are here to stop rape”, saying they chose the Venus de Milo as the sculpture with no arms best symbolizes a woman’s helplessness and vulnerability.
“Today we choose the Louvre, the museum and the statue of Venus de Milo that is symbol of a woman but without hands. We came to show that we have hands to stop rape and we will fight for that,” activist Inna Shevchenko said after the demonstration.
Wednesday’s protest followed an incident in Tunisia where a woman claimed she was raped by police officers. The woman may now face charges of indecency.
“As long as you’re a woman, you’re a potential rape victim,” Reuters quotes the protesters. “And the suggestion that happened with a girl in Tunisia, who was raped by two policemen and after was judged because of her moral position, it's crazy and it shows the reality of the world. It shows that every day we are in danger of becoming the victim of a rapist.”
The case of the woman has created massive interest in France. The woman's supporters believe the charges against her are an effort to press her to drop her accusations against the police.
The FEMEN group has recently opened a new headquarter in Paris, with plans to open offices in New York, Montreal and Sao Paulo.
The organization was founded in Ukraine in 2008 and became famous for its bare-chested protests to attract attention to women’s rights. In Paris the group has already started recruiting international members, some of whom took part in the Louvre Museum protest.
